Thief Cracked My Cylinder!!! NEED ADVICE TO REPAIR PLEASE

Recommended Posts

I have a 2001 KTM 250 MXC that just recieved the first piston change/top end(LIKE NEW BIKE)... A few weeks ago my home was broken into and my bikes were the mission!( 01 KTM 250mxc, 03 KX 125)... To their suprize I had anchors in the garage floor with a Thick Coated Cable run through the Bike Frames. Finding this I guess in desperation they begain beating on the lock with a hammer cracking my cylinder and cylinder head:bonk:. Is their a method for welding and repairing case damage to the outside of cylinder(did not make it to water jets? Also will Replating the head fix repairs? The cylinder sleeve is smooth and was just honed with only start up on new piston! I am looking Cheapest yet QUALITY Repair possible! I have to purchase a new cylinder head for sure which OEM is $110 bucks but can't afford a OEM Cylinder which cost $900 plus!!! I WOULD LIKE A Cylinder Head that is BILLET? My KX125 has a VHM Head that was on it when I purchased it but they are Exspensive? Phathead has Billet heads but not for my Bike that I seen on Lukesracing.com! ANYONE HAVE ANY ADVICE AS TO THE CYLINDER REPAIR AND ALSO POSSIBLY A BILLET HEAD PURCHASE? ANY HELP OR ADVICE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!! ALSO THE 250 MXC Bore and Stroke are 66.4/72mm ( 00-06 250EXC, 00-05 250MXC, and 00-02 250SX models have same cylinder, head, and bore/stroke).. Thanks for any Advice!!!!!

Thanks for the response guys. Athena does not offer a cylinder or head for my bike? Ebay has a few cylinders that will fit my bike but all need to be Replated or need similar work to mine.. Have U guys had any experience with Replating cylinder head? Kustom Kraft will Nikasil Cylinder and Repair everything to spec with a New Pro-X piston for $339 ($20 extra for Wiseco).. I am good with this just unsure if this fixes the crack?

also try the bike part section on KTMtalk I found things several times that I could not find by searching for a specific part.

yes you can get it welded, the weld would show up in anodizing, you can weld it with 5356 alum rod, it will give the best results, but you still my see the weld.

whatever the welder near you charges it will be much less than new cyl., i would guess if i did it something like 150.00 +or- without seeing it, shouldn't be a big deal.

Whether or not it can be welded depends on where, and how extensive, the damage is.

Welding on the head will almost certainly distort it, requiring re-surfacing.

I would chuck it,I had a cylinder on my 82Cr250 crack right at the transfer port {for no reason] and had it welded by a pro..it lasted a few weeks..then the cylinder broke right off and jumped around in the frame:smirk: until it locked solid and destroyed everything..I was very bored..get a new one..allot of force going on in there..

i would find the theives, kick their asses, and get the money for my new cylinder... then maybe kick their asses some more just for good measure. :smirk::bonk:
