Xr80 left cover gasket?

Recommended Posts

I'm tearing down the motor on my son's XR80 so I can repair a snapped exhaust stud. When the left cover came off, the gasket shredded. I'm not sure what this gasket does except keep the dirt out; There's a small hole at the bottom. The plan is to replace the head gasket, intake gasket, and valve seals while I'm in there, and leave the rest alone.

My question is this: can I use liquid gasket-maker for this, or do I *need* to buy a gasket for it?

You can use silicone gasket sealer, the poor mans gasket.:bonk:

This gasket is for keeping your flywheel clean. Depending on what year the bike is it may have points; if so this gasket is critical to keeping the points clean. If it's CDI (1992 and up) not so critical.

Breaking off the exhaust stud is a real peach.

Just get a real gasket and coat it in grease before you put it on. That way, you won't tear it when you pull the cover off. You can reuse it several times.
