Setting up light bulb to check ignition timing?

Recommended Posts

I keep seeing people say to set up a light bulb to show you when the points open. I understand how that would work but what I can't figure out is where to connect the two ends of the circuit with my light bulb and battery. The wire coming off the points has continuity with ground whether it's open or not.

If you connect to the stock harness with your battery and lamp you will also be energizing the condenser (capacitor) and charge coil. IMHO, best to make your own circuit going directly to the points and eliminate any chance of damaging the other components.

Or you could go this route:

Did you know Rep points are added by clicking on the "Thumbs Up" on the top right of this post?

Perform a compression test. If the bike showed up with the cam chain a tooth off there's a chance it's got a bent valve or damaged seat...
