Conversion to EFI for KLX450?

Recommended Posts

Hi

In USA the Kawasaki KLX450 model was only sold for 2008/9 then the line was discontinued (I imagine from poor sales, post financial crash). Anyway, it turns out that the model is still being sold in Australia and now it is Electronic Fuel Injection (as is the WR450F).

Has anyone investigated what it would take to convert from carb to EFI?

Using OEM parts? Probably prohibitively expensive. Apart from the obvious throttle body and fuel pump, there's a complete wiring harness, all the different sensors and other components, and the electrical system from the generator up will be totally different. That last part is enough to kill the project on a YZ450, since the stock magneto cannot be modified to produce the necessary output, and the mag from the EFI engine won't fit. In that bike, the magneto from a WR450 can be used, but only if you swap in a WR crank to support it. Then you still need a tone ring of some sort. I imagine there are similar challenges with a KXF450 as well.

Overall, EFI is a good thing, but converting to it isn't really very practical in most cases, and the difference in performance isn't worth it, IMO.

Possibly worth it if you had a complete doner bike. Say you found an EFI with a blown motor for cheap, used all the parts you need, then parted out your bike and the carb assembly to recoup the cost.

But finding a cheap EFI bike that someone gave up on is a task in itself.
