xr650l stalling

Recommended Posts

i went riding with a friend the other day and half way through the day his bike started stalling (he has research rats old xr650l. those who remember it). i dont know if its the cdi box. it seems like it is staving for fuel. it just randomly just stalls and when he tries to hit the gas it will stall again. then it will run fine for a little while and happen again. any thoughts?

for people that dont remember the bike. xr650l je piston 10.5, after market cam, fmf pipe, crf450 carb

You did not mention if you checked fuel flow. Always start with the basics. Pull off the fuel line and let it flow freely into a container for a while, it should flow as much as the hose diameter with no interruptions. Look into the tank if you can for debris plugging the petcock port, maybe the reserve sreen and tube popped off. If all is well there, put the fuel line on and open the carb drain and check flow through the needle and seat, it will be less than the hose, but should flow steady.

Debris near the main jet can suck in intermittently too, pull the main jet cover and look for rocks in it.

Then check ignition, if it passes fuel flow and dirt test.
