drained oil volume and oil level window

this freaked me out today.

changed oil 4 days ago. put in 1.35L after putting in a new filter. oil level in window at MAX.

rode twice, checked again before putting bike away, engine warm, oil level barely visible. i understand the window is just to verify presence of oil, but that big of a drop???

i pulled 8mm and 14mm drain plugs and drained.

i measured the drained volume and it was only 900mL...

this normal?

you guys ever also pull the drain bolt by the filter cover?

i'm gonna pull everthing off, replace 14mm plug gasket, replace filter cover oring and torque everything to spec.

i just hope that i didnt do too much damage to my engine.

is there a 1/2 liter of oil covering the whole rear suspension?

There was some oil residue on the underside of the crankcase. Rear suspension and linkage are not oily. Perhaps a slow leak from the filter cover or the drain plug?

looks like stripped 8mm drain bolt and lower oil filter cover bolt....

helicoil ordered...

That's why I don't take that bolt out!! Far to small of a bolt for regular oil changes. Are you going to split the cases now to do the heli coil?

i'm not splitting the case. i'm going to go slow, use grease to capture as much of the metal filings as possible, then flush the crankcase with oil.

Sort of bringing this back from the dead. I had the same problem. To prevent shavings from getting in the motor..... I drilled and tapped while the oil was still draining. Messy but worked like a charm.
