scraping carbon- plated piston/combustion chamber?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, disassembled my 94 250L and had to scrape some carbon from the combustion chamber and piston (been burning oil for a few K). Are these parts coated with anything? I have some very small gouges from the tool scraping and I don't want to leave little burrs that could cause preignition. Can i use a scotchbrite pad or something to remove the burrs? The parts kid at the bike shop said there might be a heat resistant coating. 10K miles on the bike, first rebuild, piston is stock.

Thanks in advance!

The OEM parts are not coated. Use some fine emery cloth to knock down the burrs & scratches. Next time, use a wire wheel brush in your drill motor or air motor to clean off the carbon.

gotcha, thanks for the info! I'm rebuilding on the dining room table though so a wire wheel in the drill would have made a HUGE mess!
