Wondering about a price for engine work

Recommended Posts

I have a 2008 crf 250r and i needed a head gasket. I figured once its apart might as well do a piston and rings. What would be a reasonable price to pay a friend that's a mechanic, considering i already bought all the parts.

Well, current labor rates are around $75 an hour. Go from there and figure out what his time was worth. You don't have to give him full price but you should make it worth his time, especially since he is on hard times and your friend. If you don't like paying alot for someone to fix your stuff learn how to do it yourself. It really isn't too difficult. Next time agree on a price prior to the repair. That can prevent hard feelings.

Ive done a few top ends, and this is my opinion only.

If youre looking for a number, id say 100 bucks. Any more than that and you should (have) put the money towards shop labor. That way at least a shop would usually stand behind their work if something was reassembled wrong/ defective. (Usually).
