What is the difference between a muffler and a silencer?

Recommended Posts

What's the difference? A silencer for 2T and a muffler for 4T? Is the packing the only difference? Is the design the same? Just curious because I just bought a DG universal bolt on steel silencer for my 79' XL and the silencer looks small and seems more like its for a 2T... Hmm...

Silencer and muffler are interchangeable terms, they are the same thing. There are a few different types on the market.

Like others said, interchangeable. When I think muffler though I tend to think traditional baffles and chambers. When I think silencer I tend to think glass pack.

Firearms use suppressors.

Unless your loading subsonics, in which case you will use a silencer.

suppressor is the correct term, silencer is the legal term. anyone who knows about them will use both words

But as far as design goes, they are all pretty much the same? This new DG looks like it won't do much of anything for sound, I dont want a super loud bike. But maybe I will be surprised...

Silencer is a British term. Here in the USA we say muffler.

In Michigan we say woodchuck, in carolina and virginia they say groundhog.

What's the difference?

About $250 from what I can tell. :smirk:

4-strokes tend to run hotter than 2-strokes, so heat is an issue.

It use to be that 4-strokes were less common, so the price was higher. That doesn't seem to have change now that 2-strokes are the odd man out. Your concern should be: Is it too small to flow the air? Will it get over heated? Does it have the spark arrestor you might need? Will it quiet the big 4-stroke. Loud bikes are fatiguing and tend to piss off everyone around you.

Typically: Muffler (4s), Silencer (2s), Can (street bike), etc. But interchangeable.

Dont listen to these idiots!

Obviously a muffler muffles the sound and a Silencer silences the sound!

How stupid can you all be?

If someone held a pillow over your head, would that be muffling or silencing you? :smirk:
