yz250f bb stroker for heavy weight

Looking to get info from someone with a similar set up. I am looking to build a bike for the up coming season. I was thinking a yz250f with a HR +3 crank and a +3mm big bore around 12.5:1 compression, wr transmission, maybe stage 1 HC. Other option is to buy a yz450f and put a wr transmission in it. I'm 6' and weigh around 240. I'm not out of shape but was a linebacker in college so have strength. I've owned a 03 yz450f 02 and 05 crf450, 95 xr600 and handle them pretty good. Only issue I had was gearing in single track woods. Xr was great in slow woods and hill climbs but sucked on faster areas and jumping, 450s just the opposite.

I don't know if I would wear out a smaller bike with my weight or would a modded engine hold up. Also the frames.

Any info is greatly appreciated.

I think you would be happier witha 450. You could do like I did and get a YZ450 and put a WR tranny in it.

Yes, you will wear out a 250f! Go with the 450.

Thanks. I was thinking that I would be too big for it. I've never ridden a 250f. Everyone I see riding would never let me take a trip on it maybe for fear I would break theirs.

I'm sure it would have no problem hauling you around. There are quite a few guys here that weigh more than you and have fun on the stock 250. The reason people like the 250 is because of the nimbleness and the flickability of it. If you're strong enough to do that to a 450 then get a 450. I think you'll have fun on a 250 and 240lbs isn't too heavy for the bike.

Thanks for chiming in guys. Really appreciate the input. Was leaning toward the 250f because I would love to have the fuel injected 450 but can't afford one right now. I can find 07-09 250f's in pretty good condition for around 2500 maybe less if the motor is trashed, and don't think the build should run me more than 1000-1500 doing it myself. Thought process is build bike to play on or friends to use next year when I can afford a 2010 or later 450. Also doing this I would know the motor is fresh. Anyone around my weight with a 250f any kind that can give me their opinion/experience.

i got a 08 yz250f and i love it im 6' 260 and i use all the power in the trees and open it does have a 270 kit and some bolt ons i still out run alot of other 250s and theres onl been a handful of times i have topped it out in a race and it wasnt for long any of the times i have stock gearing and can run first if i need to in the tight stuff or can usually run 2nd in most of the trails no problem and it will always pull a wheelie for me over a mudhole no prob

joe91cam How long have you been riding it? Did you have to do anything to the suspension? Was thinking since suspension is for a lighter mx rider it may work ok for a heavy trail rider. With some adj of the clickers and preload.

Everyone please keep giving me feedback if you have any on this subject.

You haven't really talked much about the type of riding you would be doing. If its woods or tight trails its pretty easy to suggest the big bore 250. if its open trails, fireroads, mx the bike would get pretty weak by 3rd+ gears.

You don't feel the weight after about 20mph either but under 20 the 450 gets pretty heavy. You can't hurt the 250 if its maintained right. I think the 250 would be good if you were ready to shift around more. good luck!

Sorry didn't mention. My usual riding area is pretty big and a big mixture. Its a lot of single track woods riding with some of everything. Stream crossing, sand, pretty big hills, fire roads connecting some riding areas. All of the jumping is natural jumps. I don't do much track. Was thinking wr gear ratios would be nice for that.

Not just the WR gears would be good but the WR suspension would be great. The sand might be rough if you're riding a lot in the deep. A 250 will have the RPMs to get you on top of it but might not be enjoyable going up and down big dunes and stuff

Could I just revalve my suspension and make it act like the wr. I've done fork rebuilds and plan on getting a nitrogen set up so I can fill the rear shock and my quads. I would rather rebuild, over replacing parts b/c I may need to rebuild them anyway.

i set my sag in the rear i was just at the dunes and the bike works well rode the trails and handled every big dune i could throw at it

I just got an 07 wr250f. I am 6ft and weigh 245. I did all the free mods, put a Leo Vince x3 full exhaust on and rejetted with the jd kit. The bike has more power than my skills will let me use right now. The bike has no issues at all pulling me plus all the gear. I road my friends yz450f and it was not as good through tight trails etc. but on the track it was way better than my WR. I guess how u are going to use the bike and your skill level should be taken into consideration when choosing your bike.

If you're in shape I'd buy a WR450. I have a 250 and a 450 and like them both.

The tighter the terrain the better the 250 is.

The 250 takes alot of mods to go fast.

The 450 not so much.

When the terrain opens up or I'm at an MX track the 450 is the bike to be on. It just takes more muscle than a 250 to throw around.

Both bikes are as reilable as hammers.

where in maryland are you? i was going to try and sell my 06. motor is stock though but completely rebuild about 15-20 hours ago . crank,piston,cylinder,cylinder head, cams ,valves, timing chain

i have had a 3mm hot rods crank, and a 276cc ice cube cylinder. with hot cams stage 2 combo was amazing but i pulled it off cause i couldnt stand the cost of parts for the kits a piston and oring headgasket cost over 300 i think .

im really happy with it in stock fourm if your riding in woods you dont need much power, i raced A class in the ecea harescrambles and a friend in the same class was always amazed that i could keep up with him on his ktm 525 in the grass tracks

Weighing in at 230lbs i'm what you would call a heavy weight 250F specialist. I ride motocross exlusively so my adivce may not be as applicable to your use. I can't ride a 250F with stock suspension, so I definitely recommend getting the correct spring rates and the valving to match.

I hate riding 450s, I feel like I can't push without feeling like i'm going to crash, and honestly i'm just faster on the little bike. I've raced my 250F in the 450 class and as you would expect I got smoked on the starts but I was able to charge, make up time in the turns, and stay fresh at the end to pick riders off.

If you're in the market for a used 250F I would say that the Yamaha's are your best bet. They are super reliable, have great suspension, and you can find a ton of performance parts for them on ebay. After two kawasaki's i'm riding a 2011 YZ250F.

Another big boy on a 250, well 2003 WR 250-290F. I am 6'2" and 235+gear. The power is good, in the tight stuff I hang with KTM 300's and YZ450 till the straights. I have had the bike in CO riding up to 12800', Michgan in the sandy trails around Gaylord, Hatfield McCoy trails and Durhamtown Plantation for winter fun. This bike is great. I did have Doug Blackwell redue my suspension with stiffer springs for my weight and speed. I have thought about and riden other bikes and sizes but I have gotten this one right for me. Latest addition is a SDG tall seat, just got it so have not tried it out yet, the weather sucks here in WV. I dont think you can go wrong with a WR/YZ 250.
