1999 rm250 weak spark

Recommended Posts

Trying to find the cause of a weak spark on a recently purchased 1999 rm250. The previous owner had changed out the coil with no luck and thought the problem was likely the stator.

Checked the coil and the stator with a multi-meter and both checked out fine.

I am not very electrical inclined, but I tried to check the CDI and rectifier according to the service manual, but was getting funky numbers, but I had read that the CDI isnt really checkable anyways.

What typically is the cause for a weak spark? Bad ground? Bad CDI?

What kind of meter are you using? Digital or analog with needle? I got funky numbers when checking my CDI with the cheap digital meter I had. My older analog meter gave readings inline with the manual. I'm sorting through a weak spark issue myself, but mine is looking like its the coil. Low secondary resistance. First thing would be to go through and clean all connections. Then pull flywheel and clean stator and pickup coil.

Its not cheap, but not expensive. Was like a $50 digital from autozone.

I think I am going to try going thru all connections and cleaning around the stator before I go any further.
