Kawasaki Keihin Carb Primer Pump

I have recently purchased a 1998 Prarie 400, and I'm in the process of pulling and rebuilding the carburetor. I find that there is a plunger on the side of the bowl that is called the primer valve in Kawasaki's parts breakdown. My question is does anyone ever find it necessary to use it, and how do you ever get access to it?? I also wondered how you adjust the pilot screw as it's buried under the carburetor?? I have just ordered a factory service manual, and this should help me better understand how to work on my new Prarie.
