Started the tear down..

I put a new cam chain and found my teeth on the crank are chipped so i started the tear down. here's what my piston and valves look like..what do you think? I didnt see any noticeable chips or gauges just carbon, think the piston is good to re use?

Looks good man. How many hours are on the engine? It might be smart to change the piston and rings while you have it apart as a preventative maint. kind of thing. Pour some gas down the runners and see if ou have any leakage especially around that middle intake valve.

not sure on the hours i bought it not running as a project for $300. wouldnt start thats why it was cheap and i found an intae valve was real tight so i shimmed and put a new cam chain and thats when i found the teeth on crank. so your saying pour some gas down where the shims are? its an 02 in case anyones wondering. im gonna put an 03 hot rod crank and 03 flywheel, can i use oem bearings or should i use hot rod? i ask because oem is about $30 cheaper. ill keep pics coming, working on getting the wrist pin out got both clip off but it wont slide out not sure why.

You'll be good with oem if the 02 oem are the same as the 03 bearings.

well i could just get 03 oem right? also any tricks to getting this wrist pin out? i guess maybe theres some burrs or something but i dont want to force it too much unless thats the only way to get it out

ok nevermind on the pin, i got out by gentle tapping a socket on it.

Yes, you could just get 03 oem. To get the wrist pin out, remove the circlips and tap the pin out with a small screw driver. It should slide right out. I would replace the wrist pin, along with the piston and rings when you do the crank.

ok i was leaning towards gettin a new one anyway and callin it good. man the valves are gonna be expensive though if i replace those and get the seats cut... heres the left side case and flywheel, cam chain, chain guides off..more pics as i go..

is it necessary to remove the clutch cover an clutch to split cases or can i just take the big cover side off?

got the side off, everything looks good excepth the primary gear has some nicks on the teeth pic is kinda blury..

Those cam chain teeth on the crank actually look pretty darn good to me

I see a few that are pretty sharp. When I said pour fuel down the runners I meant down the intake track and exhaust track. Lift up the head, hold level and see if you see any fuel drip out or form wetness around the face of the valve in the combustion chamber

Oh and get an exhaust cam from an 03+ with auto decompression.

heres a close up of the crank where the cam chain goes, its only about 4 teeth that have little chips. if you guys dont think its bad i can save the $300 for now and actually ride this thing.

You probly already have it off, but yes, It is necessary to remove the clutch and any drive gears to spit the cases.

You don't wanna risk running that crank with thos teeth that bad.

yea i figured that out thanks, i think im gonna use an impact wrench to get the gears and clutch bolts off, usually itll spin them off before they have time to spin the crank.haha. What about these teeth on the crank? i would just assume that if they have chips, there just gonna continue to chi and possible damage something else. Unless there not that bad im not sure never dealt with a bad crank gear.

You don't wanna risk running that crank with thos teeth that bad.

The impact works great for removing the gears, but be sure to torque them down when reinstalling everything.

yea i think im gonna have to get that motion pro sprocket holder vise grip thing, what about the clutch? how do i stop tha from turning while i torque it?
