1997 xr200 oil specs

Recommended Posts

Hi.... takes one litre of engine oil, use a good quality motorcycle oil not inexpensive car oil and change it often. The 1997 xr200r does not use a replaceable oil filter, just clean the wire screen under the oil drain cap.

Yes, there is a spin filter that needs cleaning about once a year. 1 qt of a good semi Synthetic MOTORCYCLE oil is good for hard use or racing. Good Petroleum MOTORCYCLE oil is good for general play. 10W40 or 20W50 oil is the weight used.

All of the above oils.

Another popular oil for motorcycle use is Shell Rotello T or T6 oil available at Walmart. The T is a 15W-40 and the T6 is synthetic, both are compatible with a wet clutch and provide very good high temp protection of the engine, important with an air cooled engine.

But more important than the oil used is frequent changing.

The "spin" filter is located inside the right side case; servicing is a bit involved, most dealers avoid it, and it seldom needs attention. But I think servicing it is worthwhile on a newly purchased older bike.

Make sure your engine has the oil pump intake filter screen, and you inspect and clean it at each oil change, it is held in place by a spring under the drain plug.
