Metal bits on the magnetic oil plug!

Recommended Posts

I installed one of those magnetic oil plugs on my 650L never believing it would collect any bits from the oil. Well on the last oil change there they were, bits of gleaming aluminium stuck to the plug.

The machine only has 22,000 Km on it with one trip hard to the Baja and mainland Mexico on her rest are not hard KM's.

Any one want to wager a guess what the metal could be from. She runs great, starts first crank and does not blow smoke(yet).

Cheers

Number one, if it is metal stuck to the magnet, will not be aluminum........non metallic metal?

Number one; anything clinging to the magnet is a ferrous material, e.g. iron and/or steel along with most of their alloys. (Most stainless steels are not magnetic.) Likely source is steel from the tranny, valve train, or ball bearings. Piston and other aluminum material will stay in suspension and add a silver color to the oil.

Really depends on the extent of metal that's on there. If you're talking about a fuzzy black gooey ball on the magnet then that's normal. If you've got large chunks that obviously broke off from somewhere then yeah, tranny, crank, bearings, etc...
