front wheel alighnment

What is your technic for alighning the front wheel/tire combo to the forks?

To align the forks over the axle:

  1. Snug the axle nut to ~10 ft/lb
  2. Tighten the pinch bolts on the left (brake/nut side) axle lug to their normal value of 14 ft/lb
  3. Tighten the axle nut completely (manual calls for 70 ft/lb, but the nut is aluminum. I use "feel" and end up around 50 ft/lb. You do what you think best)
  4. With the right side axle pinch bolts loose, put the bike on the ground, hold the brake, and compress the fork several times as far as possible. This forces the lower forks to center up on their axis.
  5. Tighten the right side pinch bolts.

When the forks are fully extended, the upper and lower bushings are close together, and the lower tubes can be moved left/right/forward/back quite a way. When they are compressed, the bushings move farther apart and it gets much harder to push the fork tubes out of line.
