2012 WR450 Starting woes

Boats.net/ Partzilla informed me that the part is not available anymore through Yamaha anymore. I ordered something through another Yamaha dealer, but I don't know what the part number is. Its supposed to do the same things and should be here early next week.

I'm interested to see what you end up with . I'm keen to know the part number when you get it ..

I tried to order through boats.net a few weeks ago and found the same thing no longer available .

I got mine through eBay .

I have been watching this thread even before I brought home my 2012 WR450 (which was this past Wednesday 11/20, got it super cheap too) and I have had no such issues. When its cold I always kick it after pulling the knob, but once she's warmed up I have little to no issue with E-Start, even in gear (as long as the clutch is pulled in)

 

One question, the Yamaha website states the 2012 as having a CDI ignition and the 2013+ as TDI - Anyone know which is which and whats the main difference? Just wondering if that may have anything to do w/ starting it up

I was wondering the same thing about the CDI, I also picked one up on this past Saturday for cheap and have been having trouble starting it. I think I am going to hit the dealer and ask for the sniffer test that was mentioned earlier in the thread.

I asked this question before but don't think I got an answer. after you made these adjustment have you rechecked the settings with the gytr tool?

I find this interesting because I've stalled my bike on the trail and it started back up. do you think its a temp thing that is causing it or elevation or....?

There is nothing that you can check but the Map. The map does not change if you adjust the CO levels. The map from the GYTR is just a lookup table that the ECU looks at to off set the base settings (tuning). The CO level adjustment is a separate lookup table that is adjusted by the FI tool. It should have been part of the GYTR's tuning parameters. But do to CARB and the EPA It's a dealer only adjustment. This is not only dirt bikes but its the sane for street bikes, snowmobiles, outboards, and boats. And the FI tool works on all of these built by Yamaha.

The CDI is a hotter but shorter spark and rev's higher than the TDI style. CDI also cost more. The 2010 YZ's are CDI but are now TDI. I would think both are good on the WR's.

At a glance, it looks like the extra drag of being in gear with the clutch in creates too much resistance for the starter (1/2 of the clutch is spinning when you start or kick a bike in gear with the clutch in)When in neutral with clutch out there is less resistance.

I know my '06 has a rather marginally designed starter motor, mine, like many others, will not physically turn over if the piston stops at TDC. A very rare occurance, but when it does happen you think you have a dead batt or a bad starter motor

I just received the tool from Honda east Toledo and it is the 90890-03182. Its identical to the others using the same part number. The Yamaha sticker on the box also has the number Y070515T and a separate sticker has the letters K@L with the number 35 3028. The parts guy mentioned that it was coming from the Yamaha warehouse, so I don't know why he had no problem getting it when others say they cant. I plan to try it out tomorrow, with hopefully the same results as others have had.

Should have no problems. Green wire to airbox, alligator clips to battery .

Ignition off. Hold down menu button and while holding turn ignition on .

Press up , should read co, press menu then adjust accordingly .

Turn off ignition.

Repeat steps to check .

How much $ for this tool?

Lexx makes an efi controller for the YFZ450 quad. I wonder if that would also hook up to the WR ?

Well, not sure what happened to my new Earth X battery but it wouldn't start the WR today. Started the bike fine over the last few weeks in the garage.

 

Got out to Gorman this AM and click, click, click. Had to kicj=k the bike all day which wasn't an issue as it fires right up. Will be contacting Earth X to get a replacement battery under warranty. Will let you all know if there are any issues getting the replacement.

Maybe I should have got the power commander v.  That's a lot of extra wires and crap to have under the seat though.

I followed Cassinova's directions, and it seemed to work properly. I don't have any way to check the exhaust, so I set it to 8, it was at 0. I just need it to warm up or dry out a little to see if there is an improvement.

Anyone have a Chinese fi diagnostic tool that doesn't connect, have you tried just the center pin plugged into the bike, like so 1385876381111.jpg

      Hey guys, 
      I am really needing some good advice here from anybody who has ever owned or rebuilt classic Yamaha 2 strokes (1989 - 1994). I live in South Africa, and bought a little farm thumper while on holiday this past weekend. It was advertised as a DT175 which is a bike that is easy to get parts for down here. It has been cosmetically customized and looks pretty darn cool... and lets face it, all the old classic Yamaha 2T engines look the same at a glance! So I genuinely thought it was a naked DT. The bike had no papers, and was used purely for the farmer to putt around on his farm.
      The only things needing attention was the stator cover which had snapped in half - this was visibly noticeable, and a little leak from a badly resealed gasket (both generally easy and cheap to fix here). The bike was still running and idling fine, started first kick, and I had a little ride around the farm before loading the bike up onto my pickup and heading off, thinking I could fix this thing up nicely in no time for next to nothing, and have what we call down in SA "a nuwe speelgoed" (A new plaything) for the weekends when I am not riding my beloved and reliable DRZ400SM. 
      SO, I get home and decide to contact our local Yamaha branch, out of interest, to find out the history of the bike before I start fiddling (Don't ask me why I did not do this all before I bought the bike - It was a spur of the moment purchase, and was sold to me for dirt cheap!). I send off the VIN and engine number. Comes back, and this little freakin' turd turns out to be a 1989 TDR180!! WHAT. But now I am stuck as we do not really have TDR's down here - and I have never even seen one myself.
      Long story short - What alternative could I use as a stator cover? Do any other old Yamaha 2T model stator covers fit the TDR or share similar engine parts? Ordering from Ebay is so expensive thanks to my country being in junk status due to a junk president. So the shipping costs more than the actual item does, and our customs is a joke too. Yamaha has also advised me that this stator cover has been discontinued.
      I have put up local ads looking for parts, contacted FB 2T groups, and local shops. Nothing for TDR's has come back yet.
      Any advice or sharing of experience is welcome!

      I bought a Yamaha Yz125 1996. Didn't start so I turned the Reed valves around and it worked 100%. It was standing for a very long time. Last weekend when I went out with it, it started loosing power and after a while it just stopped starting again. Can this be the reedvales that is old? Btw the idle skrew also came out  almost completely when I drove it so maybe that can be a issue. Also when I opened the Reed valves I found very thin metal shavings. What can cause this?

      Hi, here goes my first thread as well as my first post on here! Name is Matt. Been a reader for quite a while and have learned a ton from these forums.
       Anyways, i'm 24, and have liked motocross bikes since I was 6, my uncle was an mx rider here in the northeastern ohio and shoot mainly all over ohio (greg urban, 803, rode hondas say something if you know him lol) but ever since I was a young gun i was in love with bikes but never had one of my own, just a 90cc dinli 2 stroke quad my gramps got me in mansfield on the farm when i was about 12, lol! That thing and that farm are long gone, they didnt pay taxes and ended up gettin screwed for it, lost everything, all the toys, boats, quads, golf carts, had to sell it and move to somewhere much more affordable. My family isnt the smartest but theyre pretty cool. 
       ANYWAYS. I am 24 now and just recently had the chance to grab a bike to work on, ive spent my live doing other things like skateboarding, going to school, working full time, moving in with a girl etc. So I just found a 1990 yz125 on offerup for 200 bucks. I was dead broke at the time paying court costs n whatnot but I pulled together 100 bucks and made a deal with the guy to pay him 50 a week for the rest, since I had practically nothing and had literally just started a new job. So he was down and we met up and I got the bike.
      (QUESTION: Can i post any sort of htm image codes so I can post these pics throughought the thread? Cause if so im gonna edit the heck out of this thread and make it way more organized.)
       I brought her home. The reason it was so cheap is because the crankshaft was seized. The piston is in good condition, the cyclinder as well, no scratching or chipping, leading me to believe the issue could be in the main crank bearing. The guy I bought it off of has been in close contact, i see him once a week or so and we talk bikes and about the parts i'll need and whatnot. So my next step is to grab my next paycheck, finish paying him and bring the engine back over, split it open with him, and see if its just the bearing or whole crank assembly. Either way, pretty stoked about the deal, and the piston and cylinder being in such great shape.
       Im gonna attatch the pics of the bike and the engine! The cylinder head is taken off as well as the pipe and kickstart but here she is. 
       Any input is appreciated! This is my FIRST bike and if anyone has any pointers about working on 2 strokes this old, I would REALLY appreciate it!
