WILL NOT IDLE

Recommended Posts

I am running a 45, 170, 70 had the clip on the second, third, fourth and fifth position with virtually no change. I forgot who that mentioned the o-ring on thr fuel screw but I did find a tiny piece and after playing with everything it will idle with the choke pulled out only. Do I need to run a bigger jet?

Clip has no effect on idle.

Pilot jet and Fuel screw ONLY have effect on idle.

You CANNOT clean a pilot jet with wire and solvent. It won't work. Buy a new jet.

If the bike idles WITH THE CHOKE you are starving for fuel at idle, and the pilot jet and/or the passage above the pilot jet are clogged/corroded, OR you hot start is stuck partially open

Pilot jet passage cleaned out with monofiliment wire and compressed air?

Throw the pilot away.

With this ethenol fuel- you cannot clean it correctly. That is my findings.

I just changed another one this weekend.

Mine did last 5 years in this bike using fuel stabilizers.

Same symptoms.

You will pull your hair out trying to find the problem when the solution is usually the simplist.

My bike sat for 2 weeks only (ran 2 weeks ago and was starting to show the signs).

Saturday I ran it- ran like crap.

I was running a "fat" 48 pilot so I had a stock (new) 45 in my bag of goodies.

Carb cleaned (Seafoam deep creep), blown out, replace pilot.

Runs like a champ.

Also- for regular maintenance- check your pump o-ring if you use one.

Mine broke also.

I was reffering to the passage way ABOVE the pilot jet, not the jet itself.

A dirty jet stays dirty unless you clean it ultra soncially.

Agreed.

I have found the SeaFoam Deep Creep to work very good.

I use it on all my carbs and throttle bodies.

Let it sit in there wipe and blow it out.

Gonna try a 1/2 oz of pre mix oil in 3 gallons on the CRF..

I have used it on occasion with the XR and it works great.

Helps lube the carb.

Replaced Pilot with a 50 and still no results. No matter what jet and where the idle screw is set there is no change. Only idles with the choke pulled out and dies immediately when choke pushed in. Will run perfect with throttle cracked and choke in. I am about to set it on fire, help please

It boils down to a couple of things:

1. The slow circuit is plugged.

2. There is insufficent vaccum to pull the air/fuel out of the slow jet and pilot holes.

For the first, unless you disassemble the carb at mid-body, it's very tough to clean the passages. The slow circuit has two 90 degree bends in it and there is a small by-pass passage between the slow and pilot screw both of which are extremely difficult to clean.

For the second, it can be a:

1. Leak at the boot between the engine and the carb

2. A slide seal that's no longer sealing

3. Slide is installed incorrectly (upside down or flipped).

4. Hot start circuit that is slightly open (plunger is stuck or the cable is pulling the plunger).

5. No o-ring on the pilot screw.

Jim.
