Strong work Catfish! How'd the oil pump gears check out this time around?

Last set of gears had almost 150 hours on 'em and looked like new. Replaced them anyway, since that's why I was in there.

I have a TIP for everyone, the rubber band battery hold down broke on my last ride. So looking through the garage and found what appears to be a longer lasting replacement. Time will tell though. Sorry no pic !

You can find these at most places that carry camping supplies as well.

Well, guess I'm not as ingenius as I thought. Stopped at Get Dirty DB, was talking with Dave about the battery hold down, he gave me a rubber band made from an old heavy duty tube (DOH). Why didn't I think of that !  Just another way of recycling ........

I actually put on a bungie cord for the 350 rr I have..ready to ride..supposed to be today..but had flash floodwarnings thunder and lightning. .found holes in my roof going to my daughters room so addresses that..couple riders went anyway to close by trails..no answer from calls..going to go down there and check just in case..dont want to unload in the heavy rain..especially if they are out already but didnt check phone..but drive buy to look for their trucks anyway. Ill put a better rubberband later..but it works. Edited by hawaiidirtrider

My oil screen comes out of the plug. When I change my oil the screen is always stuck in the motor and not the plug. I use pliers to pull out of motor. Clean both before I reinstall. I have 2014 520 RS. There is a rubber O ring on both sides of the oil screen.

Yeah, this is the way mine comes out also. Those o-rings are delicate, one of mine had scrapes in it from new, I bought a couple extra o-rings after finding that.

But I could see that being sticky, the first time. Take your time it will come out.

Already 14hs in my new '15 300RR, suspension set, and just finished some mods:

- bimetalic rear sprocket for major durability (and better looking )

- ktm fork covers for improved protection (I don't like stock fork covers, they don't cover well and flex forward a bit, a fall with bad luck and you scratch the bottom fork tube, it happened to me before in other betas, only minor plastic trimming is needed)

- P3 carbon pipe guard (looks thick and strong)

- Enduro Engineering radiator braces (look robust, perfect fit)

I'm in no hurry to be a $500 tank. I'm just glad they're finally offering it up. I figured it was around the corner with all the EFI models in the 16' lineup

2011 Beta 520RS, 10900 miles, 449 hours.

Valves checked & still in spec. 2nd time no re-shim needed. Yea! Replaced plastic oil-pump gears for 2nd time. Rebuild front forks with new bushings & seals. One had been leaking since last summer. Rear shock still doing OK. Both were shortened 1.5 inches & re-valved by Dick's Racing in 2012.

Installed Brembo clutch MC and Midwest Mtn Engr clutch lever awhile back. Got it adjusted to where my fingers like it now. Mmmm... However, that darn clutch sures makes finding neutral tough. I must remember to blip the throttle & make the engine vibrate to help it shift when stopped.

Installed new radiator fan & temp switch. Previous temp.switch would start fan with mechanical jolt thru suspension & then run forever. D'OH! Wore out fan-motor bearings. Replaced both.

Rode Carnegie SVRA on Friday. 1st singletrack since Downieville in June. Felt good to ride the Beta again, but the dry marbles & powder made for a low-traction management day. Glad I had the new clutch lever! Looking forward to some RAIN someday!

I want another Beta in the stable. Maybe an XT Trainer with a California license plate & a chainsaw mount! ;-)

Catfish ...

If you figure out how to Ca plate an xt I'll be right along side you! PM me when you figure it out. [emoji106]

Anybody know what might cause a stuttering/sputter while cruising? I've been chasing this issue for awhile now to no avail. Tried many variations of needle position, main, pilot jet, and adjusting fuel screw but nothing. Checked the float level and set it to parallel. Have a JD jet kit in there now. Running out of ideas.

Sounds like it's still lean. Did you try cruising in different gears to see if it happens at different rpm's? or does it happen at any speed when held steady. Try playing with the choke when cruising to see if it gets better or worse.

I suggest checking the fuel cap vent.

I can recreate the problem every time in first gear. Seems like I can putt around with the throttle barely cracked open just fine but right when I start getting into the 1/4 throttle range, it sputters. Pulling the choke right when it starts to act up intensifies the problem which leads me to believe the needle is too rich.

Interesting. I swapped out the stock vent line for one of those vent lines with the cap/ball at the end. I'll have to pull the cap when it starts to sputter.

Not only a Beta thing..but other Betas have had vent line problems. I ended up dumping new one way brass inline vent valve from moose racing and just putting a straight line for ex..should have just kept it simple...problem solved... and guys with Beta have had cap issues. Guys like chris out to be familiar with the same general bike as you. There is a guy on Kauai that had a 400 street legal(2010?) that had boiling issues.. it was the vent in the cap /ball .. There are a few different characteristics depending on the severity of the issue.. sometimes it works sometime the vent doesnt. Never had a problem with my 300 .. wonder if those caps are different than newer 4 strokes.. or rs models.

Oh yea! That stupid Moose Racing valve. That's the one that was driving me nuts! I remember you telling me to ditch it. It seems the drastic elevation changes effect venting the most.
