My 11 year old just had his first big wreck on the practice track last weekend:ride: He is ok now but after a concussion, broken wrist and a decent strawberry I was wondering why I let him talk me into getting him a MX'r. He says he'll be back, good sign huh? I was hoping that he would be smarter than myself but I think that saying about the apple and the tree, It's true.

    My 01 CR250 sounds like a pissed bumblebee with the full on power shift! Leave 'er on the pin and start clutchin and bangin gears! No 4t sounds that good!

    Get the smoker, it'll make you grin every time it hits the pipe! So will the rebuild for a buck and a half too. If you're a total power freak pick up a used CR500 AF and hang on.

    Nothing sucks worse than bailin' and having to go home after just getting started! I've done it twice this year.

    I try to look as far ahead as possible and ride a lot. having really good tires and a good suspension set up will help you not to "fight the bike" and make it predictable. If at all possible learn the course and have the turns memorized. This really helps me when the trees fill out with plumage. Nothing replaces seat time! And a good set of bark busters:thumbsup:

    Rear wheel hopping

    I have a 00 CR 250 and when it is really dry and hard packed the rear will start hopping violently when I'm on the binders quite hard. I have gone in with the rebound clicker about ten clicks (on the rear) and it seems to be 90% better. I just want to know if I made the right correction to the problem or if I am just covering up a problem in a different area.

    I think I will try to stiffen up the compression a few more clicks to even out the settings between the two. I guess I never thought of it hopping into the compression stroke. Now that you said that it does make sense. Thanks for the info!
  11. I know on my CR when the rebound is clear to the Soft setting it's feels like a pogo stick, I can just about bunny hop the thing. Just a idea to try, soften the rebound and throw all your weight into the face of the jump to compress it all the way and it should really get some good height for ya. I don't claim to know a thing but it seems to work for me. Those doubles right after turns can be tricky.

    CRF450R Setup for a big boy.......?

    I'm in the same boat as you are with the weight problem. I am also looking for that magic combo. I have gone through all kinds of set ups and am just about to go on to the next thicker oil in the front and rear. I can spring it up and adjust the clickers good for MX but then it just about kills you in the tight rooted trails when I need a soft set up. I'm beginning to think a guy needs two bikes. One for MX and one for pleasure and woods riding. But I have things really close by just going with the rear spring rate that Race Tech recommended. Right now I just soften all the compression clickers for the woods and put them back for the track. BTW I'm just about 260#.

    Rear wheel hopping

    The rear shock was rebuilt by the Honda dealer last summer. As far as I can tell it works good. I don't have access to a shock dyno so I can't be for shure it was done correctly. I do know that it has a full charge of nitrogen and the clickers do make a difference when adjusted. It is sprung properly for my weight and I have the sag set at approx 100 - 105mm. This hopping crap only happens when I'm entering a very rough and fast entrance to a tight corner. On smooth or even fairly rough conditions it is great. The current clicker settings are four in on the comp. and ten in on the rebound. Could it possibly be the rear rubber? It is getting pretty sad. About 1/2 left.

    Don't stress, he's just pissy cause he got stuck with that tank of a minibike! Those things gotta have 50# on a cr85! I guess out in Cali you prolly can't even buy a 2t out there on the left coast any how. I'd be pissy too.

    Sand berm.

    Sand is cool cause you can blast through the stuff wide open! If you can run a little less air it will help some. Another good thing about sand is when you bail it doesn't hurt as bad! P.S. no front brake allowed!!!

    Saw a kid many years ago that hit a dog. That dude bailed with authority! That full grown Collie tore up his new QT 80. The dog just recently passed away a few years later. The 80 has been long dead.

    2 stroke jetting

    That stuff is what we call spooge, try and ride the bike harder and I bet it will go away. That stuff will build up in the packing material in your silencer and it will need to be repacked. Check your wet side crank seal for leakage and the condition of your top end. My bike will build some spooge up when I'm riding with the little ones, and a good old fast lap around the flat track always cleans things out for me. If you aren't fouling plugs I'd say your jetting will be close, but we all know clip adjustments and some low speed mixture adjustments are nearly a daily chore on a race bike. If your packing is saturated with un-burnt oil it may alter your power band some. Check the mechanicals first jet second. Trying to jet a worn out engine works like a saddle on a jackass!

    Get your self a 2000 CR 250 and hang on! It'll clear any jump with no problem and be way cheaper than any 450 that is worth a crap. Just my 2 cents!

    We haven't gone that deep into it yet. I'm sure we'll get things ironed out in due time. Right now were looking for some new fork guards. We haven't found any no where, not even on e-bay. If anyone out there knows where a pair can be had just let me know.

    We checked the timing today and it is dead nuts on spec with what the manual says. Just for clarity the engine doesn't kick back on you. It just kicks like a Harley with 14:1 slugs in it. I think it is normal. I think if the kick starter was on the right side like what we are used to things would be a lot better. No matter what it starts like, when it pops off, hang on!! It usually starts on the third kick when it's cold, on the first kick when it has been warmed up. It just makes you grin when you roll on it hard, just awesome!

    Cr80 into 250 frame

    I give him all the props in the world. Thinking like that is what keeps the U.S.A. #1!! When I was 16 me and a friend of mine cobbled a 350 twin Honda street bike engine on a 200x three wheeler. That thing was bad ass!!! Scary fast, it would wheelie at 50 no problem. When your that age you always have more time than money!
  23. I'm looking for a new bike for my daughter for this upcoming season. Here's the deal, I've been looking for a KX 65 or any other 65 for that matter but everyone that has one for sale is wanting way big money for it. I know of a 96 cr 80 for less than 800.00 that is pretty solid and am wondering about lowering links for the rear and raising the forks on the front. I'd probably have to possibly restrict the exhaust for a while untill she got uses to it. BTW she will be turning 10 this July and weighs about 70 lbs. I just don't want to freak her out with the power that the 80's can make. I've even had thoughts of cutting some of the foam out of the seat to get the seat height down a little more. She curently rides the family's 1974 90cc Kawasaki.

    CR 80 for my daughter?

    Yea we did check that option out as well. We checked them out with a tape and the kx 60 is about two inches shorter on the seat. But the KX 65 is a tad bit taller than the 60. They also are a tad bit more expensive too. She isn't that aggressive, yet, so I think I'm going to limit the bike at the start of this spring just so that it doesn't scare the crap out of her. I took it down the street before I put it away for the winter and it does have one hell of a power band. She says that she might want to race some time and I figured that this is a lot closer to a race bike than the CRF 80 would be. If the 60 freaks her out too much I will have no remorse trading it on a mini thumper so she'll stay happy.

    I'm not talkin' about that child support maker a few posts ago. Very nice yfz205. I've been to MO a bunch, I'm glad to see there's at least one hottie down there! Thougrt I was lookin' at something from Cali.
