    ...ran my first harescramble today!

    Good luck with that friend. I myself am 20# overweight and I'm trying to get back into riding. As a military guy, I know that cardio is the weigh (pun intended) to go. If you are going to do weight training, work the bigger muscles (chest, legs, abs) they burn the most calories because they are the biggest. It sounds like you're way ahead of me in riding ability, but It's good to hear of someone else working to improve...
