  1. It is a 2t! Came off of a 2008 KTM 250 XC. It's not obvious from the picture, but they aren't just holes in the skirt, they are closed up further inside the piston. Interesting about the extra charge transfer.
  2. What're the openings in the side of this piston that I'm pointing at? Can you tell if this came off of a 2 or a 4-stroke?

No I didn't. Is that fairly normal for XRs to have to do that?

New XR400R owner: jet kit question

Okay, I found out my idle was set too high. When it was warm it was idling at 1800. So I knocked it down to ~1300 as per manual and set the fuel screw so that it was idling smoothly. This morning I try to start it cold, and it won't keep running. It turns over and fires a few times, then stops. Any ideas to try out?

So you didn't have any issue starting with full choke on? Maybe I'm just getting too picky, because it fires right up with half-choke on. How's that 440 kit? Must be a nice extra bump in power.

That's just because I've been taking my time getting the bike together. I really appreciate the detailed responses, I'm learning as I go here. I don't feel any hesitation while I'm riding at all, I think you nailed it with the main jet, and pilot jet is just a little fine tuning, me thinks. I do start with no throttle applied, as the prev owner reminded me to do that. I had a WR250F with a similar decompression mechanism, so I'm familiar with finding TDC (that sweet spot right after the decomp ticks over). On half-choke it starts up 1-2 kicks, I'll try the air filter trick you mention, as well as priming the cylinder. As far as backfiring, it's on deceleration, and it's not bad at all, just a single pop every once in a while.

Okay, so the bike is running well. It has much better throttle response and I notice a small bump in power too. Now for jetting... The fuel screw I turned in from 1.25 out to 0.75 out, so 1/2 turn in, and it still won't start cold with full choke on... I'm guessing I need to step down 1 on the pilot jet at this point? Also, for the main jet... how do I tell it's running too rich/lean? I don't notice too much backfiring, which is a symptom of lean condition right? I guess I just pull the plug at this point to inspect for right main jetting?

    Oh I see, thanks!
  12. Hey anyone in Portland area recommend a cheap place to have tires swapped on loose wheels? Much appreciated...

New XR400R owner: jet kit question

Alright, bike started cold after several kicks and leaving the choke off. It doesn't like the choke full on, even when starting at 55deg ambient. Here's a video I shot idling... https://photos.app.goo.gl/cxybfCRtvue6UM8KA I had fit a piece of a rubber hose w/ clamp over the mid-pipe to exhaust pipe joint, but it started to smoke a little once warmed up so I removed it. But without a clamp it does spray a little exhaust on the parts near the joint. Any suggestions on a proper rubber material to seal that up? Otherwise the exhaust sounds great! Reminds me of my 2000 KTM LC4. Loud, yes, but I don't think crazy loud, so I'll be returning the vortex insert I got, which Big Gun charges 20% restocking . Anyway... I have 160/60 main/pilot in. But it must be rich at idle if it doesn't start with full choke on right? Should I start messing with the fuel screw? It's currently 1.75 turns out.

Uhhh... I hope Motul is French for zinc. Never heard of this before.

    TrailTech Vapor question

Okay, I need to play devil's advocate. Nobody heard of synthetic oils back in the mid-80's to 90's when the XR's were designed and developed right? And the big thing about XRs are they never changed throughout their life. So why is it now that synthetic oils are a must? EDIT: Alright I looked it up. Synthetic oils are older than I thought. Maybe they've been racing with synthetic oils for decades now.
