    how fix crappy ktm wiring?

    I thought the S12XC was a good tire and ran several on the 450 woods riding. We all started running Shinko fatty 216. How good can it be at $54? 2000 miles of desert it was great wear, and traction on the 500 EXC. I put one on my 450 and took it winter riding, clay, rock & root on the coast. Damn- it tracks. Never had the Michelin or Motoz soft tractionator grip like this. It reminded me of the front stud tire I keep for super wet or freezing days. I never saw a lot of difference in tires unless they were very hard or real soft. It works well on the big bikes. So this post isn't a total hijack, I found more info on automotive TXL wire. Recommended for serious off road machines, the insulation is especially thin and the wire is supposed to be more durable. looks like the ticket for dirt bikes: cheap enough, durable and thin insulation for saving space. http://www.flexwires.com/blog/how-to-choose-an-automotive-primary-wire-for-your-application/

    Headers are full time cleaning if you care. For other stuff - Magic Eraser works great - less abrasive damage than scotch brite pads.

    From 2017 on the frame is shorter (as is the motor) and more narrow. When you look at the bike without the tank and seat it looks like there isn't any room. There isn't. It looks like they took an old bike design, put it in a CAD garbage compactor program, and squashed it on the X,Y, and Z axis. They are designed for horse jockey sized riders KTM sponsors. Even at 5'10" with SC seat and lowered pegs, getting up and down off the seat is some work. The race mods turn it into a beast, and it still gets roughly 50 mpg when it romps open spaces. Great handling, use the throttle to turn corners. I changed suspension & springs. Too easy to dump a government sized budget from your wallet into one item.

    The big deal with old RFS is going to be parts. Some are going away. If you find an '07 you like, make sure it was used off road as opposed to a street dual sporter and it has some level of current maintenance. It's still a 12 yr old bike.

    Tracking Device for Off Road

    4 yrs with SPOT Gen 2. Worked in the desert for the most part. Under tree cover in some areas - very spotty. Most of the desert group bought in-reach. The unit-to-unit messaging paid off last trip with multiple flat tires for the 1st time. Saved us time, gas, and grouped up for safety. In-reach has it's tree limits. Idaho camping under the trees, it didn't send the in-camp message home without walking to some open sky. IRADIUM network with Garmin is supposed to be the huge advantage over SPOT GLOBESTAR network. They both do well in NV. Using the minimum plan of $12.48 a month, I use it trail riding and trips which costs more when you go above minimum use limits. It's about the same cost as SPOT. I use the SE & link it to the cell phone strictly for a better messaging keyboard. Garmin said they would back the DeLorme which is $100 less than their SE Garmin In reach, until they run out of repairable core units in stock.

    More practical -use of a Molex .039" female connector used as a barrel crimp, soldered, coated with epoxy, and covered with shrink wrap. Maintains solder connection while putting stress on both ends of insulated wire jacket. Crimp only, made with the leatherman 2- 18 ga wires crimped with the leatherman. Supplies minus soldering iron & solder Molex barrel & tape might be better than twisting wires for field repair. I'll skip the shrink wrap and save burning the bike by use of electrical tape. I found a KTM connection using only a copper barrel crimp and epoxy under the number plate (multiple brown wire connection).

    Here's the tough part- the purists absolutely hate a soldered connection on a bike. I found the next best thing- but that has a downside. I don't know the dimensions, so unknown if they will fit.

    I cut the sheath off back to the plastic frame clamp. Big issue is they used 20 ga wires. All the wiring add-ons we did over the years for GPS/ BD lights etc. we used 18 ga wire for turning stress. The big bundle has 11 wires in it. I know they have to send a ground wire to the headlight wire bundle - but 6 brown wires could have bunched on the frame for a smaller lead in package. If I redid the damn thing, I would join brown wires under the tank and send one ground to the headlight. I would use 1 side of ta multi-wire connector for the stock 20 ga & 18 ga to the headlight bundle for the 2nd connector half, then terminate at the connector points. Cover and tape it, the heavy wire would be more reliable. if you want to leave it as is: Cut off the heavy pvc sheathing, and slit heat shrink for a cover using 33+ electrical tape to seal it. This gets you a smaller package without the abrasion and more slack in the wire. Adjust the left steering limit the bolt for slack at full lock. Pic of full lock left with enough slack to place the small phillips. The wires and insulation are in good shape. I did take measures to add wire slack and limit turn lock travel when the bike was new.
