  1. I would buy aftermarket only because the stock pipe is obsolete and my stock pipe gets beyond repair, unless I find a good used pipe. Oh, I guess I should mention I ride a vintage 1981 YZ 250.

    ???????? If the oil burns hotter then why bother with putting gas in the tank, just run straight oil. Look up the flash point of gasoline versus two cycle oil. Even if the oil burns hotter in the end it takes longer to get to that point. So if you mix in extra oil it won't burn as fast and thus smolders out and turns into spooge.

    If your pulling the cams to swap shims, then yes release the tension on on the chain. Removing the tensioner is the best way, but if you wind it up and can lock it in place that will work too. Your best bet though is to get out your service manual (or buy one if don't have one yet) and follow the valve adjustment procedure step by step to prevent costly or time consuming repairs due to incorrect cam timing and chain tension.

    Dealerships that over charge for lousy workmanship. They are starting to give people the impression that all professional service technicians are rip offs, when some of us still give honest and affordable repairs.

    That is an awsome movie. What I find interesting is that he cast his own pistons with a mix of something like one part Ford and two parts Chevy scrap aluminum and made them work.

    O.K. how old is the fuel line on the bike? Also is it the black rubber style? If you answered 2 or more years to the first question and yes to the second question then you need to clean your carb and replace your fuel line. When you re-installed the old hose a small bit of the rubber may have chipped off the inside of the hose and lodged between the inlet needle and the inlet seat. Then when you tapped on the side of the carb and shook the bike you dislodged the rubber bit(s) only to have it float around in the bowl waiting to plug a jet. I have seen this several times. The hose looks good on the outside but is rotten on the inside.

    I hate these newer spill proof carb cans! Like others have said you spill more with the new style than old school cans. Good thing I have a few of the old style cans in good shape.

    Were you sure to pre-lube all the moving parts so they weren't put together dry? And yes, proper torque is best.
  12. If you use the proper acid for maintenance free batteries then it won't freeze period. Now if you are boiling over batteries on a regular basis then you should get your voltage regulator checked and/or replaced. Maintenance free batteries are just that maintenance free, so there should be no reason to have to top them off. They incorporate a labyrinth of venting on top of the battery to prevent spilling (and boil over to some extent). So follow the instructions when servicing a new maintenance free battery, keep your bikes charging system in proper working order, charge it often in the off season and it can last several years or more.

    It depends on the brand, but some manufactures say not to use lapping compound. Most steel valves for bikes have a stellite coating that is harder than steel and allows longer life between replacement. So lapping them in will wear this coating some and they will wear quicker. If you reface the valve seats properly with a cutter tool like Neway offers, then there is no need for lapping. http://www.newaymfg.com/frame.htm
