  2. These cheap HF trailers are kind of fun as they let the owner express their ingenuity. Very ingenious setup you have! My trailer's stock tires got old and worn out (have had it for going on 10 years) and I replaced them with Yokahama Y372 145SR12 radial car tires. A bling trailer like that needs to ride on better rubber. The radials work way better when on dirt roads and are 1" taller and slightly wider than stock. Have the wheels balanced while you are at it and the trailer can be towed smoothly at 75 mph all day long. Been from CO to UT with it many times.

    fe450 2010 charging problems

    2nd Husky34's thoughts on the fuel pump. Have never heard of a stator failing on these, while the fuel pumps on the '10s failed pretty much at a 100% rate. The faulty pumps get hot and stick, and then work again when they cool down. Once they stick, they are toast and more prone to sticking until they just crap out altogether. An alternative to the expensive OEM pump is this one sold by CA Cycleworks. I have had one of these in my bike for around 100 hours now, it has been flawless. http://ca-cycleworks.com/fp-hus

    Anyone have an FZ8 as a stable mate for their DRZ?

    Good idea to look at the FZ8 forums. The Gen 2 FZ1 is far from perfect in stock form. They suck actually. The FZ1 has weak midrange for a liter bike and gains 17hp from 5,000 to 8,000 rpm with a power commander and full exhaust. Set up this way, dyno charts by Ivans Performance show a modded FZ1 matches a stock '08 ZX10 from 2,000 to 10,000 rpm. After that, the FZ hits 150 hp and flattens, the mighty ZX cranks out over 160 hp in stock form. I doubt anyone would call a stock ZX10 slow. The modded FZ is a freakin' hoot. Yamaha tends to neuter it's non super sport bikes. Un-neurtering them pays big dividends. Ivans Performance just "hacked" the FZ1's ECU to undo the ignition retard in gears 1-3 (a lot of bikes have this, to protect us from ourselves, I suppose) eliminate fuel cut to smooth throttle response, and optimize the ignition timing curve. You still need a Power Commander to map for your mods. I bet he can do the FZ8 ECU as well. If the FZ8 is anything like the FZ1, they will have a very nice powerband after some owner involvement. Beauty is, at the price you are being quoted, the bike is inexpensive enough to make such mods feasible. Your dealer is out of his mind on the FZ1 pricing by the way. The FZ1 is 8 model years old now and way overdue for an update. The new Ninja 1000 is out and spanks the FZ1 in most respects. As a result, you can get a new FZ1 for around 9K OTD all day long. Even that does not make sense as you can buy a well set up pristine used one for around 5K or even less, depending on year. I bought mine new as a leftover in November 2006 for 7.9K OTD.

    I have an '06 well set up FZ1. The thing is a beast. You can roll it on at 2,000 rpm in 6th and it will pull smoothly until it hits 7 grand, and then the real felonious party begins. It literally has power everywhere. You can cruise at 60, pop up to 125 in a few seconds and be doing 60 again. Like any good liter class bike, the power is just stupid. I like stupid The 1st generation FZ1s are perhaps the best do it all bike ever made. They are cheap and both generations run forever. It is not uncommon at all to see FZ1s with 6 figure mileage on them. The R1 based motor is durable. R1s are durable too for that matter. This is perhaps the prettiest example of a Gen 1 I have seen in awhile, and it is right up the street from me. Would love to buy it and have both generations of FZ1 (ya, I like them that much), but the wife would kill me! Crazy what $3,800 can buy in FZ1 land... http://denver.en.craigslist.org/mcy/4577785902.html The new '09 is very cool - great motor, but the bike itself is kind of small. Would be fun for local rides and doing hooligan activities (the 09 sounds great with a pipe on it and does sick wheelies, both qualities endear it to me plenty) but I can't really see riding one of my 300 mile mountain ride days like I do on the FZ1. The mountains have a way of making bikes feel small. Bring a big stick and twist that throttle, and the mountains can be more fun than one should be allowed to have. It is hard for a new bike to compete with what you can get in the used market. The FZ8 is well made and will last forever. Have not ridden one, but the rap on them is they are bland. I wonder if a full exhaust and a Power Commander would wake it up, or if it is "terminally tuned for torque". I suspect the latter. 4 valve instead of 5 valve head aside, they are basically a smaller capacity FZ1, as heavy as an FZ1 with 20% displacement. Not really an inspiring recipe for success.

    I have not noticed any notable difference in cooling characteristics. My bike has a fan kit with a BMW car thermo switch which activates at 203F per the Trail Tech which monitors the temp coming off the head. Pretty much no matter how badly I torture my bike in hard core clutch slipping 5 miles of Hell type terrain, it won't go over 220F. My right thigh gets done medium rare from the fan though. I did the Evans and the fan kit at the same time. Honestly I have no doubt it would be fine with Engine Ice or conventional coolant. The KTM has a high pressure rad cap (1.8) and I do like that the Evans does not boil and build much pressure in the system. Evans is a bit controversial. The theory is it does not boil and therefore it is in full contact with the hot parts of the head, while water based coolant can locally boil with tiny bubbles on the head that are scrubbed away by the flow of the coolant. Evans claims air is an insulator and that the it's product is more efficient at removing heat. Others claim that the local boiling of normal water coolant efficiently removes heat. Who knows - I don't have a Masters degree in Thermodynamics. A friend does though, perhaps I should ask him! All I know is my bike never pukes coolant and the level stays the same and it won't overheat as it is set up now using Evans coolant. Works for me!

    On going OEM support?

    My KTM riding friends call my '10 FE 450 "the most confused KTM". Good thing about that is most of the parts are interchangeable with KTM. The big items that are not like engine cases and plastic subframe, are hopefully items that do not generally need replacing.

    Rather Dirty DRZ400E Cleaning help?

    I like to use a Toro electric leaf blower with concentrator nozzle to "pressure dry" my bike after washing. It works particularly well on blasting the water out of the chain. A little OCD I suppose, but it really does get the water out of the nooks and crannies very well! I have a Snap On electric pressure washer. It is perfect for bike use, not nearly as strong as a gas powered one, but strong enough you still have to be careful with it. I avoid using the super pencil beam concentrated setting and use a wider and softer fan setting instead. Uses less water than a hose too!

    Believe it or not, in some ways the 'Berg is a better street bike. I ran 13/50 gearing on my DRZ as it was ridden almost exclusively off road. With that gearing, it's max easy cruising speed was around 60 mph. The DRZ's main handicap, as we all know, is a relatively close ratio 5 speed trans. A 6 speed WR trans DRZ would be a thing of beauty. The 'Berg has the "XCW" wide ratio trans. 1st is a rock crawler and 6th is pretty much unusable below 50 mph, so it is pretty much a road going gear only. If you balance the wheels and hang on, the 'Berg can cruise on the street at 75 mph no problem with stock gearing from a power train standpoint. Max speed is just over 90 mph indicated. The slant engine is smooth when revved too, like the DRZ. Vibes are a relative non issue. Good as all that may sound, the bike itself is not well suited to street riding. You sit up higher on the 'Berg vs. a comparatively "down in" feeling on the DRZ and your body acts more like a sail. The 'Berg seat is wide and very firm. Far superior to the KTM seat and excellent off road, but it quickly becomes a weapon of ass destruction on the street. As anyone who has ridden a dual sport knows, the pain suffered on the street grows exponentially with speed and strong winds. 60 to 65 mph on the 'Berg is relaxed and easy. Beyond 65, like any dirt bike, the effects of the wind and dirt bike ergos can quickly become oppressive. I have a plate on my 'Berg, but is only there to connect trails and maybe go into town to get gas or lunch. One time I rode it through Ouray, CO on the street on the way to Engineer pass. It felt so illegal, and yet it was legal enough I suppose - plated and insured, working cool LED tail light and a feeble headlight. The 450 'Berg is not sold as a street legal bike, but it has the same wiring harness as the legal 570, so given a lax and/or friendly DMV clerk to issue a plate, and it is legal enough. GEICO is more than happy to take a small amount of my money to insure it As for off road, funny about that. The 'Berg was apparently set up a super skinny Euro guy and in stock form quite undersprung for my 190 pound weight. My modded DRZ had better suspension than my stock Berg! Simply adding proper springs remedied the 'Berg though. I did not bother revalving it, feels good to me! The main difference now is in weight, power and handling. As for sheer bump absorption in gnarly terrain, a modded DRZ is not bad at all. Everybody underestimates the DRZ. Had a lot of fun off road with my DRZ, really irritated some people too. Something about a well set up DRZ. The nature of the power, a bit of give/flex in the chassis - It has that undefinable "don't worry about it, just ride the sh%t out of me" quality...

    For what it is worth, I bought my '02 S from an eye surgeon with 900 mostly street (given the lack of wear) miles for $3,200 back in 2003. The Dr. was afraid of injuring his hands in a crash. He had reason to be afraid, as he took the bike off road with the stock Death Wings on it. After meeting him, I had no qualms about buying my DRZ for a very good price. Over the following 7 years I modded it with Hotcams, Yosh full exhaust, FCR carb, "E" base gasket, Race Tech valving in the shock, 6.0 shock spring, .48 fork springs/revalved forks, IMS tank, braided front brake line, Renthal bars and probably a few other things I am forgetting about. Took good care of it and rode it for about 10,000 hard core off road miles. The bike was meticulously maintained and clean but obviously well used. Sold it for my $2,600 asking price. I still have fond memories of my "S". It never once let me down. "Stalwart" is the word I use to describe my DRZ. After selling the S, I bought a '10 Husaberg FE450 demo bike with 6 hours on it in late '10 for $5,495 OTD and $275 shipping to CO. Bought the bike sight unseen from a dealer in CA. Was a bit nervous about that, but the bike arrived with appropriate minor scuffing from it's minimal use. I figure it is a dirt bike, I keep them a long time and who cares. The 'Berg now has 135 hours on it and, like the DRZ before it, is meticulously maintained, clean and, yes, well used. Those scuffs, scrapes and scars are the result of many fun off road adventures. The slant engine Berg is an amazing bike by the way. DRZ like in it's flywheel feel, traction and power delivery, but just raise the whole curve by at least 20%, and the light and sharp steering front end holds a line. Was a bit nervous about the 'Berg's reliability as pre 2009 'Bergs are very finicky and I was spoiled by my unbreakably reliable DRZ experience. The post 2009 Bergs are basically improved blue KTMs though, and aside from a bum fuel pump (easy and cheap fix) the 'Berg has been as reliable as my DRZ A favorite pic of my old DRZ (left as a link so it does not clutter up the thread).     Buy the prior owner as much as the bike itself when shopping used. If the PO knows what he is doing, a modded bike can be a fantastic bargain. On the other hand, if the PO is a moron, a modded bike can be a nightmare. It is not that hard to tell the difference once you hang out with the owner in his garage for a few minutes. If you have any doubt at all, walk away. If the owner/bike are a gem, pay up and be happy!

    Another option (although it is a little expensive) is to run Evans waterless coolant. No need for an overflow tank at all with that stuff as it simply will not expand and puke out the overflow hose (if the level is set correctly to just the top of the radiator fins), or boil. The only caveat with using Evans is it is good to have a fan mounted. Since the Evans will not boil, you do not have the "warning" of your bike boiling over that conventional coolant provides. I saw one guy literally melt his hoses using this stuff because he had no fan and was not aware of how hot it was getting. Been running Evans for a few years now, it is a lifetime coolant too, no need to ever replace. My bike has a small Trail Tech temp gauge, I don't notice any difference in cooling performance, just the lack of ever having to top off the radiator. Set it and forget it.     2010 FE390 needs battery replaced...LiFePO4 suggestions?

    I have had the Shorai in my FE450 for going on 2 years now with no issues. Dropped it in with the pads to fit, have not looked at it since. No need for using a Battery Tender or anything, thumb the button and it goes. I have no particular affinity for the Shorai, it was on sale ($90 or so) on Amazon, so I snagged it. I do love these batteries though. The weight difference up high on the bike is readily apparent when riding!
