  1. It has begun. Struck a deal this afternoon for a new 2014 (leftover) KLX 140L. We go tomorrow to pick it up. The Baja Designs kit will come along in a week or so. Want to give the wife an opportunity to ride it first before I sink even more $$ into it with the Baja kit. Hope it works out to be THE bike for the Mrs. FWIW: When the wife and I were in this same dealership a couple weeks ago, we spent some time talking with one of the women ("Pat") that works a department at the dealership. I've/we've known Pat for years via this dealership that is owned by an old motorcycling friend. Pat is close to the same size/weight as my wife. Anyway, Pat has a KLX 140L that she has kitted and dual sports. She's owned/ridden it for several years now. She loves it. Pat says she has zero problem running with 55+ MPH traffic when they're on pavement. Her comments were encouraging to both the wife and I. All fer now.
  2. Hi again Seldom: Understood on the difference in height between the 140 and 140L fitting your lady better. I figured as much on the kit fitting the span of years that have transpired since the Baja Kit advertisement was placed. Mirrors and DOT tires are a given, as well as a speedometer. I have tagged several dirt bikes over the years and have learned to leave no stone unturned. Fortunately, it's a straight-forward process here in OK where I live. As for being lured by the TU250X: Shame on you! Just remember that the XT250 can go anywhere the TU250X can go... but can also take you places the TU would never, ever, be able to take you! Between those two options, it would be no contest for me: The XT. Actually, I tried a bit of pure street bike riding from Nov of 2007 up until a short time ago via a couple of Harley's. Though I found things I enjoyed about pure street riding... it just doesn't hold a candle to the joys of being able to hit the dirt. I haven't been without a dirt-capable bike since 1969 (except for a few short months) and fully intend to own and ride one until I can't ride anymore. I'm currently aboard a 2012 WR250R, with my older Honda XR250R (tagged) waiting patiently in the garage for a call back to duty. So far the magic button is winning concerning the choice of bikes.
  3. Hi Seldom Seen: We're thinking about doing the same thing for my 5'4" wife. Thus far, not much response in my thread concerning same here: http://www.thumpertalk.com/topic/1132764-klx-140l-wbaja-ds-kit/ Question: Are you looking at the 140L or the 140? The 140L has the 19" front wheel and 16" rear wheel. The 140 has smaller wheels.
  4. An update: The XT225 is to be sold. It's a great bike, just the wrong bike for the wife. It will be detailed and sold on consignment at the local dealer. We are going to start the process of finding a KLX 140L. Would prefer new, but don't like the price. So, we hope to find the right used bike (which must include correct paperwork) and then I'll start the process of converting it so it can be street legal here in OK, beginning with a Baja Designs kit. This is a last ditch effort. If her confidence doesn't return by returning to a lighter bike that fits her better, then it too, will be sold and she's done with riding. All fer now. Vinduroman
  5. Hi sidewndr46: Thanks for your input. The forks are lowered in the triple clamps, and the pre-load is softened for as much sag as we can. Unfortunately, Kouba-Link doesn't make a lowering link for the XT225, I've already checked. Suggestions on how to reduce the height further?
  6. Hi All: Wife has a 2006 XT225. Not a bad bike, but still way too heavy for her during a turn-around, slow speed handling, etc. (She's 5.4" and 130-140 lbs.) The least bobble during low speed that causes her to go a bit too far over center at all, and the weight takes over and down it goes. Seat height is fine, her navigating novice trails and forest roads/etc, is fine... it's the weight during slow speed handling. At this point, the only thing that I've taken off the bike is the passenger foot peg assemblies, every thing else is pretty much factory stock (handlebars are different brand). What sorts of things could I replace/remove to reduce weight, yet still keep it "street legal" for dual sport purposes? In addition to exploring weight reduction possibilities with here XT225, I'm even looking into the possibility of putting a dual sport kit on a Kawasaki KLX 140L to try to get a lighter bike for her that still has a low enough seat height. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!
  7. Hi All: Wife is currently riding a 2006 Yamaha XT225. With a seat height of 31.9", it sits low enough for her (she's only 5'4" and weighs in the 130-140 lb range), but the weight of the bike (238 lbs DRY, if I recall correctly) just really kicks her in the butt during a turn-around or handling it at slow speeds and such. I'm wondering if a KLX 140L can be made to be a better choice? What I'm could use some input concerning: * Can a KLX 140L be geared so that it can pull at least 50-55 MPH on pavement for some extended distances (i.e. 5-10 miles), yet still have a low enough 1st gear to do acceptably well on mild trails? * I note that Baja Designs dual sport kit for the KLX 140L only covers the years 2008-2012. Is this simply due to the web page needing an update, or did Kawasaki change something about the KLX 140L that makes this dual sport kit no longer useable for 2013 and up? (Note to self: Send an email to Baja Designs and ask this question.) According to the specs I've found, the seat height for both the XT (31.9") and the little KLX (31.5") are almost identical. The curb weight (all fluids full) of the KLX 140L is listed at 209.4 lbs, so that would be a weight saving of right at 40 lbs over the curb weight of an XT225. That's significant. Any user-experience input concerning the KLX 140L, as well as input on the above questions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  8. Well crap... an "Old Timers" thread. Reckon I'm a certified "geezer" now, so I ought to post: Just turned 62. Been riding dirt since 1969. Owned a ton of bikes (40+?)... rode most of them to death. Currently have 4 (selling 1) in the garage and looking to add another in the near future. Wife rides too, I taught her to ride in the mid-late seventies. She currently rides an '09 CRF230L and I ride a '12 WR250R. Also was heavily into vinduro (VINtage enDURO) bikes... but I don't currently own one at the moment... BUT... that's what I'm now looking to add back to the stable! Did a bit of competition early on in my riding (and some later), but soon learned that trail riding/dual sporting is where I find my biggest personal reward in riding and I've been primarily a trail rider/dual sport rider ever since. Can't imagine not riding.
  9. I purchased a new WR250R last April. It's my first OEM street legal dual sport in decades. (Been riding tagged dirt bikes.) I keep liking it better and better the more I ride it. However, I would not really say its an entry level bike. The seat is TALL if you're of the shorter persuasion. (I'm 6'1") Also, the power delivery requires more aggressive riding to keep it in the meat of its power range. (It's not a great "plunker".) It is a very capable dual sport... but really don't think it would be well suited for an entry level rider. My wife's '09 CRF230L is an incredible entry/novice level bike: Smooth power delivery, tractor-like torque, acceptable cruising speeds for short distances, low seat height, lighter weight (260 lbs) etc. It CAN be ridden more seriously if the skill level allows... but it is much more limited by its lack of suspension. Last year we did Colorado and her CRF230L did amazingly well at high altitude with its stock jetting. Very impressive little scoot with mild manners.
  10. This Big Pig Bike thing is getting silly. Not bustin' those that enjoy such, it just that for me that is about as opposite as it could ever be for the things I want to do with my dual purpose riding. I guess Big Pig Bike's are the hot item now. V-man

  12. Rlrider: Do a lot of investigation and really study the specs. The new CRF250L looks great in regards to price point but beware of its specs. It is very heavy (I recall 321 lbs) and very underpowered (I recall 17 HP). The KLX250s is a very capable bike for trail riding and some light hiway. My wife has a 2009 CRF230L that she really likes. It does fine for short hiway jaunts and is the lightest of the mid-bores at 261 lbs. I have ridden it and it is a very capable "fun" bike. I could have a ball on one. I ride a '12 WR250R and I'm liking it better and better... but you've already ruled that one out so I mention the above points. Vinduroman

  14. Wow... wife and I discussed two vacation options: Plan A: Ride our recently purchased (March '11) touring bike to the Black Hills of SD so she can see the sights I got to see. (Was there by myself on a previous hot rod bike... no way she could do the 2800 miles of the trip sitting on the passenger pillion.) Plan B: If there's a bad weather forecast for the Black Hills a few days before leaving... take our 4WD and go to Colorado (basically our favorite place to vacation). Afterthought: Why not trailer our dual sport bikes along and ride a little bit? As the time nears, we realized we needed to have Plan B better thought out in case that's the direction we head. Soooo... out came my new "Motorcycling Colorado" book... and we begin to browse it for some ideas for Plan B. Whoa. This is where Plan A begin to fall apart. Long story short: We'll do the Black Hills aboard our touring bike some other time.... we're goin' dual sportin' in Colorado! There are too many unexplored passes still out in Colorado... and we've never done them on dual sport bikes. (Only rented Jeeps and our 4WD.) We think we've put together a ride that will be EPIC. Here's what we've come up with that will stay within the wife's skill level and still offer fantastic scenery: * Day 1: Arrive Canyon City in our 4WD w/bikes on the trailer and lodge for the night. * Day 2: Unload the bikes, pack a lite backpack and leave Canyon City and head north on Phantom Canyon Road to Victor and Cripple Creek. North of Cripple Creek take Gold Camp Road to Colorado Springs and lodge there for the night. * Day 3: Leave Colorado Springs, return over Gold Camp Road to the Cripple Creek/Victor area, then ride the Shelf-Red Canyon road back to Canyon City. Freshen up, load the bikes and head for Pitkin, CO for to lodge at a favorite cabin we've used before. * Day 4: Leave Pitkin and head over Wanuita Pass and Black Sage Pass to Sargents, CO, pick up Marshall Pass road and ride it to Salida for lunch n' fuel. Return the same route. * Day 5: Leave Pitkin for Taylor Lake via Cumberland Pass. Fuel and food at Taylor Lake and return. * Day 6: Short day with a ride up to Alpine Tunnel and enjoy the ambiance of that historic area. That afternoon load up and head for Crested Butte to lodge for the night. * Day 7: Leaving from Crested Butte ride Ohio Pass over to Paonia, CO, food and fuel, then back to Crested Butte via Kebler Pass. Lodge at Crested Butte again. * Day 8: Laid back morning. Bikes loaded, ready to head east. Do some of the Black Canyon in our 4WD and leave out for eastern Oklahoma that afternoon. Lodge somewhere that night while on the road. * Day 9: Arrive home! We're are gettin' so excited we're about to pee our pants!!! Vinduroman
  15. Good thread. I'm thinking a different direction this time around. For decades I've worn the traditional riding pant (stretchy side elastic and short below the knee cut) with traditional off-road boots, knee pads/etc. This time around, I'm thinking a shorter boot, looser fitting pants w/full length leg and use strap-on knee/shin protection under them. All of the above as waterproofed as possible. I can use Underarmor during colder riding.
