  1. Just got to the desert and realized I forgot my key. Anyone know which wires to jumper? I unplugged the switch assembly and the harness leading to it has 4 wires: black/white stripe, brown, and 2 yellow/red stripe. Thanks.

    Lugging bad for these motors?

    I've got a Rekluse on both of my bikes and yeah its totally cheating. Above 2k rpms or so it's exactly like a normal clutch. Feather the lever to break the ass loose, drop it to wheelie, etc etc. Below 2k it allows slippage. So lugging is impossible, you always have the perfect amount of clutch for a given rpm. Its especially handy when you hit that unexpected rock and the bike jerks to a sudden stop - with the Rekluse the bike is still running and you can usually get away with just a dab. Example of riding with a Rekluse: I was riding Fins n' Things out in Moab and dropped into a hard left in deep sand around a bush. I more or less just planted a foot and spun the bike around since it was a U-turn only to find that a 15' wall of slickrock stood in front of me and I had no speed in deep sand with a trials tire. I barely hit the wall with enough momentum to even get the front wheel high enough to allow the rear to get out of the sand. All I did was stand on the pegs, stick the bars in my gut, and gently manipulate the throttle. My front tire was about 1-2" off the rock the whole way up the face. No way in hell could I have done that if I was feathering the clutch. My skills are pretty mediocre at best.
  3. Legally it can't be done. Some people have gone to enough DMV's to find an inept inspector. The problem is CARB is the governing body that reviews these situations and they can have your plate pulled. I haven't heard of it happening to anyone I know, but a few people on the forums have said that CARB took their plate. So yeah, Arizona is the best way.

    If you're saying that lower rpm = less wear and tear then you're partially right. Absolutely a bearing that is spinning faster has more frictional forces and will experience normal wear faster. However when "lugging", the rotational forces are reduced but extreme compressional forces are subjected on the drivetrain. Is it bad? Absolutely. I wouldn't say the OP needs to worry about the occasional 'gear too high' situation, but its not a practice that should be embraced either. Basically, if you're out of the torque curve and can downshift or clutch, go ahead and do it. If however you're making a practice of running at too high of a gear to reduce bearing rpm, save gas, or whatever the logic is, you're doing way more harm than good.

    Got Lithium? To charge or not?

    I had a Shorai that lasted a year, and a Ballistic that also lasted a year. I know LiFEPo4 batteries don't like to be at too low or too high voltage. I suspect that the charging system can sometimes overcharge them - no idea what conditions trigger this. Might just be a difference in cell quality control (allowing one or more cells to get out of balance). I recently had an electrical SNAFU which killed my SLA battery so I did some research and decided to try making a supercapacitor pack. Ended up being half the weight of a Ballistic (1/4 weight of the SLA battery) and seems to be working well. Could be a worthwhile option depending on your riding habits.     Mixing tire brands

    I'm running a MT43 rear and a Kenda Parker DT up front - both DOT legal. By far this has been my favorite dual sport combo for desert/highway riding. The 606 front has the worst traction out of any of the aggressive fronts I've tried, and there have been several. The rear isn't bad although I liked the MT-21 better there as well.

    I'm using an MT43 rear with a Kenda Parker DT up front and its by far my favorite DOT legal combo for desert/street use. The Kenda blows the 606 out of the water in all terrain except street since it does wear a bit faster than the 606.

    Definitely skip the D606 front. Wears like its made of iron, unfortunately it grips like it is too. Rear ain't half bad though.

  12. Despite getting a brand-new-to-me 800GS just weeks before this year's ride, I still took my KTM. LAB2V is fine for big bikes but IMO way more fun for <650cc. As much as I wanted to play with the new machine, its all about using the right tool for the job. Plenty of folks do it on adventure bikes, but most folks that have the option choose to leave the big bike at home.

    This is all brought on by CARB, which is the militant left arm of the EPA. Both organizations are bat-shit crazy and totally driven by trying to increase their own revenues under the guise of 'protecting the environment'. In short, there isn't a more twisted and corrupt branch of government. Sad thing is, they get full support by the overwhelmingly liberal population in Ca who will vote for anything that says 'environment' without bothering to read the fine print.

  15. My dad had a WR250R and it is a pretty solid bike, albeit underpowered. Keep in mind though that I'm riding on a bored out KTM 450 EXC (now a 565) so I have more power than I know what to do with. You can get the WR anywhere with a bit of work but I found its power a bit, well, dull. Not helping it is that it's mostly top end power so it always felt to me like it wanted to go fast but just couldn't. I didn't like it much for slower, technical riding which is ironic since most WR owners say they got it for trails. My dad, who is a much less experienced rider than I am, agreed that he had a hard time with power delivery when going slow through technical areas. When you could get it into the open it was a fun bike, and admittedly, it was more comfortable on the freeway than my KTM. I hated it in sand however, where the lack of power and heavy weight made it extremely difficult to keep the front wheel floating. It just plowed and plowed even with the Trackmaster II rear and Parker DT front - tires I've run on my own bikes with only typical sand misbehavior. My KTM has a trials tire on the rear and I can keep the front end on top of the sand 100x easier than I could on the WR. A steering damper is probably a necessity if you ride much sand. We didn't get one, and my dad had a nasty spill when he hit some deep sand while following me at about 30mph. 11 fractures and a punctured lung. He sold the bike and stopped riding. We also lowered his via the lowering link, shock adjustment, and a seat concepts low seat but once we added some decent knobs I could touch both feet comfortably, but not flat foot with my 30" inseam. It's just a hair over 300lbs which is still lighter than the (also underpowered) CRF250L. I will admit though that the WR doesn't feel like a 300lb bike when your riding it, but boy does it when you have to pick it up! Again, keep in mind that I'm used to my KTM which is almost 50 lbs less. I'd challenge anyone considering the WR to check out the KTM 350 EXC. Unless you're planning on slapping on soft bags and turning it into a cross-country mini adventure bike I think the 350EXC is the better bike. At 70lbs less weight, it doesn't just feel light. It is light. Yes it costs more, but when you look at all the things you'd have to do to the WR (suspension, tires, exhaust, big bore, rotors, brake lines, hydraulic clutch, etc) to get the WR on a level playing field, the cost difference is negligible. With the 350 you're looking at a skid plate and larger fuel tank as being the only necessary add ons - both of which you'd also need to purchase for the WR.
