    RM250 97 or 98 mod

If it is a 97 the tenth letter in the VIN will be a V

    97 rm250

I have the same bike and it is VERY hard to start. I just did a new top end and still hard to start. I have compression and spark so it must be the carb. I have taken my carb apart and it is spotless. Some people on this website say they use a 35 idle jet. I may have to try that. There is no compression release. The exhaust valve doesn't move until you get up to certain rpms, so it doesn't even move when kick starting. You might look at the plug after kicking a few times and see if it is wet, then the bike is probably flooding. Let me know if you figure it out. I have sprayed a little starter fluid in the filter and it started right up once.
  3. I was doing a top end on my 97 RM250 and when moving the kick starter to check the piston operation I noticed the rod that actuates the exhaust valve was not moving. It appears to be connected down in the engine. Does it only actuate at certain speeds? Such as when it is running? Do I have a problem.

    Float height 97 rm250 ?

Anyone know the correct float height for a 97 RM 250? It is the PWK37E1 Carb. The float setting is supposed to be measured when it is barely touching the jet, I am not sure what that means? Does it just barely touch the tip of the float needle or the spring loaded part that sticks out from the float needle?

    97 RM 250 No power in 1st and 2nd

Welcome to the club! I have the same bike. First I would check the compression. Mine had 135 and would barely start. It has less now so I am going to do a top end kit and try that. Look for spark next. If you have good spark & good compression then it has to be the gas meaning the carb most likely. Good luck! I cleaned the carb and had the best luck starting it with the gas off and with the throttle wide open. Mine usually dies when you open the gas, unless you are riding it. My carb is spotless and has the stock jets. I took the slack out of the throttle cable and turned the idle screw all the way in and it idles ok but is very hard to start cold. My daughter has a newer RM85 and it starts first kick every time.

    Suzuki official vin checker

I tried running my vin but it gives an error of VIN NOT FOUND so it must be UK specific.

    97 rm250 hard starting

Thanks for the great ideas. I will have to work on it this weekend. It is been raining like crazy so I won't be riding anyway. I just bought the bike and supposedly the carb had just been rebuilt. It looks spotless and the float needle looks brand new. I dropped the bike once and gas flowed out the over flow tube so I don't think it is blocked. I will try blowing air through the fuel inlet, I didn't think of that. It runs fine for a few minutes with the gas off at idle. I am not sure how to set the float height. I found a post that indicated this year was 16mm which i measured from the bottom half of the carb to the bottom of the float when the float was barely touching the needle. I was holding it at about a 45 degree angle. Is this the correct measurement and method? Pitt said his needed really small pilots -- what is really small? At what PSI would you want to do a top end? I see some really high figures listed for 2 strokes but I am not sure what it would be for this year model? Thanks for all the help!

    97 rm250 hard starting

I have a 97 RM250 that is hard to start cold or hot. I have cleaned the carb spotless (it has stock jets and set the float height to 16mm .63" my needle was on the center position so i moved it up one, clean gas, blue spark, new plug and the reeds look fine. It is hard (many kicks) to start. After about 4-5 kicks with throttle wide open I have 135 compression. When it starts it will die if the fuel is on, with the fuel off I have gotten it to idle. Some smoke, lots of smoke when cold with wide open throttle. Pretty big dent in exhaust pipe. One thread said a dented exhaust and clogged packing caused hard starting? Is that true What is the best way to start this bike? I have had the best luck with the throttle wide open. Some people just seem to give a short kick while others give it a full stroke? Any experts on this bike with ideas?
