    +1 I've been using Bel Ray gear saver for as long as I can remember. I understand people trying to save a few bucks here and there, but when you invest the amount of money we do in these bikes, hop-ups, gear, etc., I don't understand why you would cheap out on the life blood of the bike and buy something not specifically made for a bike. I hear old used underwear make great air filters too
  3. Just picked this up Saturday, 2012 250 XC-W. Haven't even finished breaking in the engine yet. Only rode it up the street as part of the break in procedure. Installed Scott's w/sub mount, EE bark busters w/hand guards, EE radiator braces, EE skid plate, EE slave cylinder guard and knock down bar, EE carbon fiber pipe guard, KTM rear disk guard.

    GMoss beat me to it. I've never weighed both bikes, but lugging them off the bike stand and/or into the truck, the 200 feels a bit lighter than my YZ250. However, in the woods where it really counts, the 200 "feels" much lighter. The other big difference is in the power delivery between the two bikes. The YZ even with my heavier flywheel and lowered gearing still hits hard and fast. If you get tired or lazy in the woods, the YZ will get out of shape beneath you in a hurry, thus tiring you quicker. The 200 power delivery is linear and smooth; its almost cheating For purely tight technical woods riding, I can't see how a bigger engine provides any advantage over the 200. Now if you're out in the wide open or climbing some monster hill climbs, the 250 or 300 comes in handy.

    That is a NICE looking bike, congrats! Oh man, they never look so good as they do brand new. I'm jealous for two reasons; 1) You have a brand new bike, and 2) its parked in the living room! My buddies used to tell me when I bought a new bike to take a screw driver and put a big assed gouge in the side panel. That way when you lay it down for the first time, you're far less pissed I personally love my 200. I know in the woods that I'm faster on my 200 than any other bike I've ever ridden. Crazy light, super smooth and more than enough power to eat up the single track. If I were to upgrade to a new bike, it might be the 250xc, but I really don't want the e-start that comes on all the new KTM off-roaders.

    Ktm 500

    I owned a 91 KTM 500 and rode it in the woods. It wasn't a torque monster, but rather very linear. You didn't realize how fast you were going until you tried to stop that beast It was a reliable bike and went anywhere very well. There were however, several drawbacks: 1) Left side kick-starter . Like any 500cc 2-Stroke this thing had gobs of compression. I had to get off the bike and start it with my right leg when the bike was cold. After the bike warmed up I could get it to start with my left leg. I can't tell you how many times I blew up my right shin trying to start it cold and having the kick starter come flying back and smash me in the shin! 2) It would vibrate the bolts right out of the frame . . . literally! My hands used to go numb about 30 minutes into a ride. If you didn't know any better, you'd swear both main bearings were shot it vibrated that bad. 3) No after market parts for this bike, and given it's age the KTM parts cost a small fortune! I smashed the pipe completely flat after a long day in the woods and an altercation with a tree that wouldn't move. This was 7 years ago and the stock KTM pipe cost me $375+. My plastics were zip tied together because the stock shrouds were something like $75 per side ! The only reason I sold the bike was because I couldn't afford to replace parts after a couple seasons of hard woods riding.

    Ktm 200?

    I just picked up on 08 200 XC and it's damn near the ultimate woods weapon. I'm coming off an 05 YZ250 and an 08 YZ450 that I have set up for the woods. The 200 power delivery is absolutely dialed for the tight technical single track; good torque, linear power delivery, and you can lug 2nd and 3rd gear all day. I took mine out for the first time this past weekend and subjected it to a 2 day single track rock garden festival I was climbing a steep rock infested hill and I pulled it in 3rd gear with just an occasional fanning of the clutch. The bike is super light and flick-able and I had plenty of energy at the end of the day. I weight 225 without gear and this bike never felt under-powered. I even climbed a few rather large hill climbs with no problem. If I had to point out one down-side it's the lack of instant snap. I'm used to my YZ250 and 450F where you can wick the throttle even at low RPMs and the bike snaps to life. For instance there were a few occasions this past weekend where I'd be coming out of a tight technical section into a nice loamy berm with a long exit; I'd wick the throttle and the bike was slow to come to life. It's hard to criticize this because it's exactly what makes the bike so superb in the technical stuff. No matter how lazy you get with the throttle, the rear wheel stays planted and just pulls you smooth and easy in a straight line. If I were riding my YZ250 or 450F in the tight technical stuff and gave it a bit too much throttle, I'd get tons of wheel spin and the back end would step out and swap all over the place wasting a lot of energy on my part trying to keep the bike upright and pointing forward. I just have to get used to riding the 200 like a 125 in certain situations where you need to clutch the hell out of it in order to really rip out of turns. If you like technical single track, get the 200 and you won't regret it !!
  8. This isn't a YZ specific question, but I've found the posters who frequent this forum tend to be the most helpful and knowledgeable. I picked up a new to me 08 KTM 200 XC recently; don't worry, I still have my trusty 05 YZ 250 . The previous owner left about 1/2 tank of gas mixed with WP pre-mix. I use BelRay H1R. So I'm wondering if I need to drain the KTM's tank of the existing gas/pre-mix, or if I could simply just run the existing tank low and then fill it with a fresh batch of my H1R. I've heard people say you shouldn't mix gas containing different pre-mixes because the various pre-mix oils can clot when mixed or otherwise react badly. It's been like hearsay or urban legend, but I wanted to ask this question and get a definitive answer. Is this fact or fiction?

    Compression test 2005 yz250

    Keep kicking it until you're sure you've topped out. When I put a new top end in mine last year and did a compression test immediately after; I had to kick it about 15 times before it topped out at about 220psi.

    Oh man, how ironic. I was born and raised in Upper Dauphin county and worked in Harrisburg for 15 years. I only moved to Pittsburgh 2 years ago. Have you ever ridden the Tower City area or Mount Carmel?

    Where in PA are you located? I live near Pittsburgh and I'd be glad to walk you through a fork service the first time. I have all the tools you need to do the job. I just did my 05 YZ 250 forks earlier this year. Once you see how easy it is to service your forks, you'll kick yourself in the ass for ever paying someone to do it !!

    The one think I found strange about the KDX 200/220 was that first gear was so low it was unusable and 2nd gear was so high that you had to rev first gear to the moon and drop it into 2nd gear pretty quick in order to get 2nd to catch and not stall. It was the only KDX I ever rode, so maybe the one I rode had a problem or the owner geared it crazy. I would have expected that being a purpose built woods bike that you could lug it in 2nd or 3rd gear all day long. I will say this, I rode with the owner of that bike since he bought it new in 2000. Maintenance was not on the top of his priority list. After a few years it looked like it was a 10 year old bike. We used to joke with people and ask them to guess what year his KDX was and inevitably they guessed 5-10 years older than it really was . But, it always started on a few kicks and never left him stranded

  15. I had an altercation with a tree this past weekend and bent the left footpeg mount on my 2008 YZ450F. The footpeg mounts are attached to the frame with Torx head bolts and I don't own a Torx socket set. I'm going to head to Sears and pick up a single Torx socket just for this job. Can anyone tell me the Torx socket size I need for the footpeg mount bolts?
