    just rebuilt, engine noises

being a 426 and having built it on quite a budget, there are still some old parts that are a bit on the worn side, the clutch basket does have some dips showing up in it's sides and i didn't have the cash for hot cams or to put in a new rod and crank, but i think i'll just take it for a few gentle rides and see how it progresses, i will be doing those clearances properly as soon as i get those shims, (i live on a little island where postage takes weeks and there isn't a bike shop for a few thousand k's). I'll be back if i have more questions or news, Cheers, Jesse

    just rebuilt, engine noises

only a couple of thou, max. i am beginning to think i maybe just a bit paranoid. maybe tomorrow i'll go listen to a friends 03 450 that has just had a 490 kit put in it. i remember it being a noisy bike maybe that will help me gauge whether mine is a problem or not. i did notice today that the clutch cover seems to act as a bit of a resonator for sound, if i put my palm on it, it takes away a little bit of the sound. anyone else ever come across that?

    just rebuilt, engine noises

i cannot remember exactly, but i remember measuring the clearance between the skirt and the barrel and it being quite alright. The nikasil on the barrel was in quite good nick with the cross hatch from it's previous life still showing nicely. and again my old barrel and piston was a lot more worn beforehand and it didn't sound like this before. what do these bike sound like when their valve clearances are too large, i am familiar with the sound of loose tappets but that of large clearances in a bucket and shim setup?, the only person i could get to listen to it and tell me whether to be worried or not is away for another few weeks
  4. i have just put my 426 back together after 3rd gear let go, the bike is running fine, but i am worried that it is rather loud, i am concerned about it being a little end knock except it didn't have a knock there before i pulled it apart, i have installed a new wiseco piston and gudgeon pin and a second hand but in good condition barrel. i am waiting on a shim kit before i can shim the valves perfectly, at the moment i have made do with what i had and got them close enough that i don't think it should be a problem. the bike is particularly loud at idle. I'm hoping i am just paranoid, but if anyone can ease my mind or tell me what to check to ease my mind that would be greatly appreciated,

    engine rebuild for the 426

did you lose a gear pinion and a shift fork on this bike? i have just rebuilt my 426 after 3rd gear came apart and smashed everything.

    did I, or didn't I?

had totally resigned myself to the fact that i was going to have to tear the engine down again, when i realised why i had a dowel (had picked up a collection of dowels from the wrecker) and also i could look through the oil gallery and could clearly see the dowel inside. so relieved not to have to do all that work again. now i am waiting for my frame from the sandblaster.

    did I, or didn't I?

had to vent my frustration after completely reassembling my engine and not being sure whether i replaced that little dowel and o-ring that carries oil between the two halves of the cases. now i am faced with the dilemma of whether to tear it all down again and check, or whether to put the bike back together anyway. i will probably spend more time deciding whether to do it or not than if i just do it. i think we have all done something like this at some stage and been extremely pissed off at ourselves.

    426 engine assembly

bumping this thread back up because i am completely stuck on this, i have looked at exploded parts diagrams to try and make sure i have all washers/spacers in the right places and i can't see anything wrong, but i guess i must be doing something wrong. the cases go together very nice and easily and i can shift through gears with the cases apart but can't go past 3rd with them together, it wants to push the cases apart when i try. really need a bit of help guys, Cheers, Jesse

    426 engine assembly

alright , i got my gears, selector forks and drum into the cases and i can move through gears with cases apart but when i slip the cases together i can't get past 3rd gear. gears 1,2 and 3 select easily and the cases went together very smoothly and easily. i have taken it all apart and put the cases together a few times but i just can't make it select 4th or 5th. i have gone through and checked the condition of all the forks gears and the drum, all is good and moves smoothly but as soon as the cases go together no 4th or 5th. i tried selecting 4th and 5th with the cases not bolted up and the cases want to push apart as soon as there is any pressure on the shift shaft. pretty baffled, i have been very thorough in checking everything but i must be missing something. any help would be appreciated Cheers, Jesse

    426 engine assembly

thanks a lot fellas, some really great advice here. i'll keep an eye on this thread for anything i should keep in mind. and i'll keep you all posted on how it goes back together. my frame is being sandblasted as we speak. hopefully it will come back to the great bike it was before it all went bang

    426 engine assembly

I finally got hold of all the parts i need to rebuild my 426. it did a selector fork and gear pinion. the cases are split and the gear shafts are rebuilt and ready to go back in. it is all laid out on a table with clean rags underneath it and i think i will attack it this weekend. are there any things to keep an eye out for when putting this back together. what are some common mistakes made by people that i can make special effort to avoid. any tips are much appreciated, Cheers,

    06 yz450 wont shift down from 4th

sorry krannie, i realize there is nothing on that side, just got confused when typing. what i meant to suggest is to get in behind the cover on the flywheel/generator side, and look at the mechanism on the other end of the gear selector shaft. you're absolutely right Krannie, I just used the wrong words. good luck with it.

    06 yz450 wont shift down from 4th

my advice, avoid running the bike until you figure this out, it's hell when the gearboxes on these fail. i'd get the clutch cover off and have a look around, keep fiddling but you may have to go deeper
