Just finished up the Fall Cross Country race season with the AMA Hare Scrambles. Our "race family" now includes 7 families with 11 racers, 9 youth and 2 adult. I am even thinking of getting into an old guy class in the spring. Below are two vids that were done by one of the sponsors, our gang happens to be seen throughout the first one. The mud on day two was indeed epic, we needed a bull dozer to get our truck and toy hauler unstuck Sunday afternoon!

    The Green Turd

The initial purchase from the PO was $300. The "mint" frame was only $150. From there it got way out of hand, I probably have $2500 into a bike that should only sell for $1500. Luckily the "project" was for the fun of restoring, not something that needed to pencil out in the end. I bought OEM bolts where needed, Excel spokes, tires, then the eBay stuff started, seat, swing arm, forks, etc, then the upgrades, shift star, idler gear, ACR mod, and on and on. The original bike only donated about 1/3 of the parts including the engine. One of the things that amazed me was that for a bike that was so clearly neglected and abused by wrenches (many broken bolts), the engine had perfect compression and after doing the carb and adding a jet kit it runs like a top.

    The Green Turd

Up and running, finally finished the KLX300R project. I had finished the basic assembly but had not really double checked things like carb settings and stuff. Figured I would see if it ran at all and an amazing thing happened. Second easy kick, starts perfect, idles perfect runs perfect! After about an hour of mixed ride time I'm pretty sure this thing will be a keeper.

Ruins of the Hotel Bret Harte at Deer View, El Dorado County CA. Turns out I have some family history here a few generations back so I went to take a look. Fantastic bike ride to get there! http://www.sierranevadageotourism.org/content/deer-view/sieD32DFF4938B308502

    300R Rear Brake Lever Question

    Awesome thanks!!!!!

    300R Rear Brake Lever Question

Thank you! It looks like the upper end of the spring hooks to a tab or something on the frame near the recess area for the swing arm bolt. There is nothing like that on my frame in that area. Any idea what that anchor point is? Thanks again, Pete
  11. This seems pretty lame but here goes. There is a spring that attaches to the rear brake lever to pull it up when not engaged. Where does the other end of the spring attach to? On my very distressed project bike there was no spring present when I got it. I am using a replacement frame but it is from a 1999 KLX300R. I don't yet have the spring itself but from parts pics it looks like it should hook onto the frame somewhere near the engine mount / swing arm bolt. I don't see a spot. A pic would be awesome! Thanks, Pete BTW, attached is current project status, started out as a rusted POS.

Recently rediscovered a great high country trail system. Dog Valley and Bull Ranch Creek area north of Truckee. Three 12/13 year olds on CRF150Rs and two 60 somethings on DRZ/KLX 400s. Steep, sandy and way fun.

I wish that I had taken a few more pics of this place. Traversing UNDER this cabin was a ditch that was a diversion of the adjacent creek. At the low point, right side in both pics, was some framework that suggested a Pelton Wheel used to be there to generate power.

We were traversing old Henness Pass Road, a main Gold Rush era wagon road between Reno and Nevada City CA and had to take a detour due to winter damage. Stumbled on this.

Way cool. The real reason that I decided to keep it was a conversation that I had with my local riding buddy. This is the guy that talked me into buying the DRZ when I returned to the world of bikes 5 or so years ago. He learned that I had the KLX and immediately said that I needed to keep it. He then said almost the exact same thing that you just did. It had been his bike previous to the DRZ and he loved it. He had a significant right leg surgery and had to move to an electric start bike or he said he would still have the KLX. More soon!
