Bottom end rebuild- Lots of pictures!!

GM0397, looking at the pic you took of the shift drum, and segment it looks like the pawls are upside down to me. The rounded part needs to go down into #2 part and the square edges need to be on the segment.

    06 yz250 push-rod cover leak!

Gotta be Trans. oil, I would just watch it, if it gets worse it's not that hard to change you will just need a new seal and right side case gasket.

    Crankshaft Removal/Replacement Tool Checklist

Snap ring pliers and a dial indicator for timing when you are done. I just finished my crank this last weekend, don't sweat taking the tranny out, its not that hard to get it back in, just a little patience. The only thing I would do different with mine next time is I would install the seals after the crank is installed. The right side of the crank has a pretty sharp shoulder on it and wants to roll the seal when installing the crank.

    Athena gaskets vs. Tusk gaskets

Thanks for the input. Here is my situation, I put a new top end in 2 weeks ago and when I checked for free play in the big end rod bearing I thought I felt some movement but I talked myself into just putting it all back together and then I ran the bike in the garage for 5 to 7 minutes thats it. Of course the thought of having a bad crank was on my mind so I checked for free play with my dial indicator(thanks Carver) and the crank needed to be replaced. So I have all my parts including a complete athena gasket set but as you read in my first post I'm not sure I want to use it. Here is my stupid question, would you guys reuse the base gasket that I just took off that only had 5 to 7 minutes of use, it is a cometic gasket by the way.
  10. Have any of you guys had any bad luck with Athena gaskets kits, mainly the base gasket for an 07 yz 250. Here is my concern, I have used a Tusk gasket kit one time and after about an hour or so of riding the base gasket would start to collect dust on it like it was "bleeding through". The athena base gasket is all paper, similar to the Tusk and I dont want to use it if it bleeds oil and gas through it like the Tusk did.

    YZ250 Timing Thread

carver, you're the man! I have questioned my crank big end bearing. So after reading this yesterday I came to work today and had a little extra time to machine my own dial indicator insert, and I have access to many starrett indicators. So after tonight I will know where my timing is and if I need to replace my crank. Thanks:thumbsup:

Your Favourite Picture Of You and Your Bike

  14. I did not read through all the comments but here is my 2 cents worth. I sent my 07 yz 250 cylinder to Powerseal last July. I did not send a piston, when I got it back I installed a stock "B" piston, by the way the cylinder looked amazing. After install I started it up and within 45 sec. of run time it started to make a funny sound I had not heard before. I shut it down and pulled the head off, sure enough there were rub marks, I was pissed but I wanted to ride so I put it back together and went riding. The bike actually ran really good and I rode for about 2 hours. Got home pulled the head back off and it looked worse. I called Powerseal and explained it just like I did here, they had me send back the cylinder and the piston. I told them I didn't want to reuse that piston, so the guy I was talking to sold me a wiseco at cost and said he would clean up the cylinder and check clearence on the new piston to cylinder. They did a greast job and I am a customer for life.
