    1990 DR350 won't start

Yep, I'd put in a new plug. The bike is now starting, after I cleaned all the connectors, and snipped the last 1/2" off the plug wire. It's still a bear when cold, needs a lot of priming and a perfect kick, but whatever, it starts eventually, and runs fine after.Spark is still kind of weak but it's definitely better. So, just gonna live with it for now and try refining my technique, right now it is definitely the hardest bike to kick start I've ever owned.

    1990 DR350 won't start

Ok, update on this. I decided to ignore my compression reading since the bike ran before it was parked, and seemed to have good compression. Tried bump starting it down a very long hill and it worked. The bike pulls strong and idles fine, choke lever will spike the idle, and the idle adjust knob works. I can bump start it down a hill in 3rd gear every time. So, I'm thinking carb and compression are good, valves are set to spec, don't see any evidence of a vacuum leak (but haven't ridden it long enough to see if the idle hangs when it's hot). But, even when warm, it's very very hard to kick start, only managed to do it once so far. When cold, impossible. I've tried opening and closing the throttle 5 times to prime it with the pump, kicking it over with the compression lever open to prime it, and both together. I'm now thinking electrical - maybe I can't kick it hard enough to generate enough spark? Spark was weak but I don't know what's normal. I checked stator and coil resistance already and they seemed to be in spec. Other than cleaning connectors and leads, any suggestions?

    1990 DR350 won't start

Found this thread: http://advrider.com/index.php?threads/dr350-low-compression-or-how-to-compression-test-a-kick-start-bike.779016/ If I try to bump start, it has enough compression to lock up the rear even in third. But, kicking it over or bumping it, throttle wide open, compression peaked at 65. If I put some weight on it I can kick it over without the decomp lever. A little oil in the cylinder didn't change anything. Valves appear to be set correctly, maybe a bit loose. PO swears it ran fine before he swapped the pumper carb off, and it sat since then. Any ideas?

    1990 DR350 won't start

Just picked up a non-running 1990 DR350. According to the PO it ran up until he let it sit for a few months. I've spent the afternoon trying to figure it out, looking for some ideas. It's got the Mikuni pumper carb and a K&N filter if that matters. The battery was dead, but supposedly that doesn't matter? It's on the charger now in any case. I originally thought carb, but I pulled the carb and it looks really clean inside, both main (140) and pilot (forgot to write it down) looked great with no gunk in the pilot holes. I sprayed carb cleaner and compressed air through all the passages, no blockages as far as I could tell. I can dip it, but like I say it looked super clean. Gas in the tank is fresh as well, and there's definitely gas in the bowl. I put a new spark plug in siince spark was pretty weak. It's a little better, but still seems a bit weak to me, don't know these bikes that well. I followed the Haynes manual on checking stator and coil resistance, both look to be in spec. Haven't checked compression since it's kick-start, but it definitely compresses at the top of the stroke, the kickstart lever won't budge without pulling the compression relief. I did the whole, kick to prime, etc. no dice. Tried bump-start, no luck. Finally got desperate and tried a squirt of starter fluid in the airbox, didn't even cough. Any ideas?

    78 KTM 400 parts

Thanks for the leads, pentonpartsusa was the winner.

    78 KTM 400 parts

Just picked up a project bike, 1978 KTM 400. Been sitting for 10 years, and I'm having trouble finding parts - need a carb rebuild kit and new intake boots for it. Any good vintage KTM/dirt bike suppliers out there?

    1979 xr500, kick start spindle

Ok thanks, will try flipping it upside down. Will a later year 500 shaft work? I see some early 80s ones on ebay.
  8. Acting on advice to cross-post this from vintage. Just picked up a cheap 1979 XR500r, cheap because it has a few issues - non-stock seat and rear fender, and a leaky tank, and a busted kick starter. On the kick starter, the lever is gone and kick start shaft needs replacing. Does anyone have a service manual for a 1979? The internet can't agree on whether to split the cases on a 79. From the diagrams it looks like a circlip on the end inside the case that would have to come off. Part c in the xr500 manual here: http://davesbikes.weebly.com/manuals.html Other issues, it's missing the compression release cable. I'd just as soon fit with a manual compression release. Any idea where I can find one that will bolt up and go? It's also missing the front brake perch and cable, guess someone wanted to dirt track it. If anyone has a spare kick start lever and spindle, front brake perch and cable, or compression release they don't want, please holler.
