    The new Clear Creek restrictions...

I recently started riding Clear Creek and fell in love with the place. It pains me to learn about the new ruling on the case. Can the BLM really patrol and enforce the new marked trails only policy? What is next? If they can't enforce it, another lawsuit from the same 2 groups will seek to close CC completely to OHV use. And what about the EPA? The perceived asbestos threat may prove to be the final blow. The recent testing resulted in an unprecedented summer closure. Now I fear the BLM will be "forced"(sued) into closing the area once they have proven themselves unable to enforce the marked trails only policy and the EPA gets involved. I'm trying to stay positive but the more I know the more frustrated I get.

I met up with Fremont Les again on Wednesday and rode the northwest trails of Clear Creek this time. I think we were riding above R02 in the 120's. I even stopped to take some pictures. I appreciate this place more each time I go. Thanks for leading the way Les Northwest Panarama http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a249/gginner/Clear%20Creek%20in%20Dec/widepanoramaviewwest.jpg Hillclimb Heaven http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a249/gginner/Clear%20Creek%20in%20Dec/hillclimbarea1.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a249/gginner/Clear%20Creek%20in%20Dec/going.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a249/gginner/Clear%20Creek%20in%20Dec/gone.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a249/gginner/Clear%20Creek%20in%20Dec/leshillclimb.jpg Moonscapes http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a249/gginner/Clear%20Creek%20in%20Dec/moonscapes.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a249/gginner/Clear%20Creek%20in%20Dec/ClearCreek2002.jpg Roots and ruts http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a249/gginner/Clear%20Creek%20in%20Dec/rutsandroots.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a249/gginner/Clear%20Creek%20in%20Dec/ruts.jpg More to come as soon as Photobuckets scheduled maintenance ends!

Clear Creek Tuesday or Wednesday anyone?

No problem, I have nothing against 2 strokes really. I would love to have one as my second bike. I just don't like riding behind one all day. Come on and join us if you can, I promise not to complain.

"I got tired of smelling the 2 smoker following behind you last time." Who said I would be following you?

O.K Wednesday it is at Oak Flat. Les, are you bringing both your bikes? I got tired of smelling the 2 smoker following behind you last time.
  10. Here are some of the pics I took on Sunday. Where are you?

I would consider British Columbia also. Great skiing/riding, beautiful country, wide open spaces. Not sure about the economy and cost of living. Long cold winters, but not a problem if you like the snow. Definetely worth checking out if you haven't been there. Oregon and Washington would also be on my list of places to explore for a new home/life. I also live in Santa Cruz and have a hard time imagining a nicer place to live. The weather is incredible but the place is getting crowded. I'm starting to think about alternatives too but it's hard to come up with anything better when you live in paradise.

    clear creek conditions?

I kind of figured it was BS. I can't believe how much money was/is being spent removing asbestos from school buildings. Fear is one of Americas weakest links. We propogate fear like it is a commodity. I am guilty. Mining is a dangerous job no matter what you are mining. It's the prolonged exposure that is reported to be the problem. I guess I should be more worried about hurting myself following Fremont Les than inhaling a little asbestos.

    clear creek conditions?

I am pleased to report that I had the honor of being roosted on by the venerable bigbob AND fremontguy at Clear Creek on Sunday. It was a perfect day weather wise and the dust wasn't too bad off of the main roads. This was my first time there and I loved it. I rode with Bob and Tom in the morning doing mostly double track, and FremontLes in the afternoon. Les does like to ride difficult tight single track and Sunday was no exception. I really enjoyed having him lead me around the place following him through goat trails - no make that rabbit trails. I gained a lot of confidence seeing him do it first. Hey, if he can do it, I can do it - even if I am on a 320lb DRZ400S Thanks guys for showing me around. Clear Creek is my new favorite place to ride but I think I will wait for a little rain before I go again. I'm not a big fan of inhaling asbestos in large quantities and there are some high concentration areas where that white dust gets kicked up by lead riders. Much less of a concern when the ground is moist or you are in the lead position. I'm unsure if there are any real health risks but I'd rather play it safe now than sorry later. A large portion of the area map describes the asbestos "problem" and precautions to take such as washing your vehicle before returning home, washing clothes separately, etc. Maybe they are just covering their butts but it makes you wonder. I'll post a couple pics later when I'm at home.
  14. Count me in for Sunday. Should be there by 9:00am. Looking forward to checking out the Creek!
  15. I will be at Hollister on Wednesday the 16th if anyone wants to hook up. Look for a charcoal grey Dodge Dakota and a Blue DRZ 400S. I will be arriving around 10:00am and riding for a couple hours. Clear Creek next Sunday Monday is looking good too, assuming I don't break anything tomorrow.

    Hollister Wednesday Nov. 16th

I'm thinking so. I have never been to Clear Creek before and several other TT'ers are camping there. I'm looking forward to checking the place out and meeting some new riders.
  17. I agree the Husky's are nice but what about reliability - not to mention the price. I think the dealer here was asking $8000.
  18. I'm going up to the Crystal Basin Rec area off hwy 50 this weekend. Looking for good places to camp and ride. We are towing a boat and hope to catch some fish after riding. I'm thinking about staying at Ice house Reservoir or Union Valley Reservoir. Anybody have any advice on where to camp and ride? We all have dual sport bikes so we can ride on the road to get to trails if needed. Thanks!

    Boulder Creek Ride

Who says there are no good places to ride in the Santa Cruz mountains anymore? You just have to know somebody to show you around and not be afraid of running into trouble(deliverance music starts here). And it helps to have a dual-sport bike to link up the trails. We found some new trails yesterday near Big Basin State Park. One section in particular had some really tight switchbacks where you had to get off your bike and wrestle it around. At one point I had to wonder if we really should be doing this. It was getting late and I kept expecting to run into some shotgun toting pot growers. Some of the trails were really overgrown and seldom used. Other sections were wide open fire roads with nice views of the coastal mountains. I have to say I really enjoy cruising on the pavement after riding tight trails in the dirt. It's the best of both worlds. I get to play in the redwood forest in first through third gear and then I get to open it up in 4th and 5th on the road only slowing down for some really fun twisters through the backroads. Honestly I don't think it gets much better than this. There is always the danger of accidentally riding onto someones property when following some of the trails we were on. I think the majority of the stuff we rode was private property but there were no houses or keep out signs. There are a lot of intermittently logged parcels of land that see no logging activity for a couple of years. Some are pretty remote with steep terrain and some decent trails. We covered about 30 miles, half of which was on the road. Good stuff! many of the trails look like this http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a249/gginner/Boulder%20Creek%20ride/BCmotorcyclerideandbeachparty023.jpg and this http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a249/gginner/Boulder%20Creek%20ride/BCmotorcyclerideandbeachparty028.jpg Deep in the forest http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a249/gginner/Boulder%20Creek%20ride/BCmotorcyclerideandbeachparty066.jpg Even deeper http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a249/gginner/Boulder%20Creek%20ride/BCmotorcyclerideandbeachparty031.jpg The trail got a little tight in places http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a249/gginner/Boulder%20Creek%20ride/BCmotorcyclerideandbeachparty071.jpg Switchbacks can be a bitch sometimes http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a249/gginner/Boulder%20Creek%20ride/BCmotorcyclerideandbeachparty060.jpg Nice ridgetop trail http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a249/gginner/Boulder%20Creek%20ride/BCmotorcyclerideandbeachparty054.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a249/gginner/Boulder%20Creek%20ride/BCmotorcyclerideandbeachparty044.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a249/gginner/Boulder%20Creek%20ride/BCmotorcyclerideandbeachparty055.jpg Fire road http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a249/gginner/Boulder%20Creek%20ride/BCmotorcyclerideandbeachparty068.jpg Coastal vista http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a249/gginner/Boulder%20Creek%20ride/BCmotorcyclerideandbeachparty069.jpg Lots of log crossings http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a249/gginner/Boulder%20Creek%20ride/BCmotorcyclerideandbeachparty038.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a249/gginner/Boulder%20Creek%20ride/BCmotorcyclerideandbeachparty032.jpg Marty getting ready to roost me http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a249/gginner/Boulder%20Creek%20ride/BCmotorcyclerideandbeachparty056.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a249/gginner/Boulder%20Creek%20ride/BCmotorcyclerideandbeachparty050.jpg Road cruise action photo http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a249/gginner/Boulder%20Creek%20ride/BCmotorcyclerideandbeachparty063.jpg After ride repairs http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a249/gginner/Boulder%20Creek%20ride/BCmotorcyclerideandbeachparty020.jpg Had enough picts?
