    Yz400f PITA to start

Haven't done anything with it yet. It has new fuel line and filter. Haven't checked the needle jet but when I cleaned the carb it seemed clean.

Not sure what brand it is but it's aftermarket. Didn't you say turning it out made it lean? If that were the case wouldn't I need a smaller one? It ran better leaner.
  3. Maybe ease off talking about it for about a month and maybe he will come around.
  4. Try to get them to stop at a dealer with you to talk to one of the sales guys about sizing. Maybe if he sees the difference of you sitting on each bike then he will be able to see.

Turned out the screw and it helped with the cold starting a lot but still had the hanging idle.

I can rule out the hot start circuit being a leak because I capped it on the intake and it didn't make a difference. I might go riding tomorrow and if so ill try turning out the screw.

So what it's doing is if I turn the choke on it will start 1st kick but then die shortly after. If I try to give it a little bit of gas it will die right away. If I leave it to idle it will die after about 10 seconds. It will do this about 6 times until I am able to rev it up a little bit and keep it going. I am thinking of trying to open the hot start as soon as I get it going and see what it does. If that makes it worse I'll try just turning off the choke right away.

Ok, I think the pilot jet might be too big. It has a number 50 but it wouldn't run with a 45

Took it apart and the valves were still in spec so the valve seats must be good. Turns out it fouled a plug from running too rich. I put the old one that was in it when I got it and it started up good on choke. Ran good but now it has that hanging idle again.

I never did the valve work it was done by the previous owner. However the head was resurfaced so they should have done it while they were at it.

Replaced plug when I did the valves. Last I looked at the plug it was running rich and that was with a 65 pilot. Down to a 50 and I haven't checked it since. Top end was just rebuilt and has about 25 HRS on it but I'll check my compression to make sure everything is still good. Gas should be fine filled it up last time I went riding a month ago.

1998 Yz400f. I am using the correct starting process #50 pilot jet, stock sized main jet. White brothers silencer and twin air filter that's brand new. It ran better before with stock silencer and dual layer old air filter but still took some kicks to start. Had it running before with the filter and silencer but it took probably 30 kicks. I noticed if I had no chock, no hot start, and half throttle it would try to fire. Valves were just shimmed in spec.

Which Handguards? Give me your opinion

Plastics and everything look the same as mine was. Now that I look online they are the same design. NVM

That looks like an 85. I had the same type of bike and I got tusk bark busters.

    Cracking and Clicking Noise

You probably will, may have to pull the swing arm as well.
