Is My DRZ400-E Worthy of the Trans America Trail?

About how much money would you bring along for such a trip? I was figuring $2-$3k with a few hundred on person at a time

Is My DRZ400-E Worthy of the Trans America Trail?

I currently run 13/33. A bit funny, but a good crossover for trail and road! Again, comfortably topping out at about 55-60. But I recently purchased a 15t front sprocket so I can cruise on the highway with 15/33

Wow, thanks for those loctite checks! Much appreciated! What are you checking on the Stator? I asked the previous owner, a good friend of mine, about the jetting and he had it tested with larger jets at the local shop and there was very little difference reported so he stuck with the stock jetting for the Keihin FCR39 [I shall read more into it though!] Thanks again for the help! -Miles

DRZ Condition, What To Expect For Longevity?

Thanks for the heads up with heavy tubes and other checks! Would clutch plates be a concern? They feel completely fine, but practiced learning wheelies on it all last year. I know this stuff is pretty bold to gauge based on the information. But can't thank everyone enough for the help!

DRZ Condition, What To Expect For Longevity?

Hello all! I am looking into traveling the Trans America Trail on my DRZ400E. Starting in Rhode Island, ending in Southern California; returning East on RT66. [~6'000 miles dirt, and then ~4,000 miles road return trip] 2003 DRZ400-E ~6k miles: total on bike - 5k miles: lightly ridden, never seen dirt - 0.7k miles: %100 hard off road [past year] Frequent Oil changes, Air Filter changes {again, well maintained but ridden hard the past year} Front and Rear Suspension rebuilt, carburetor rebuilt all last year Stock everything except FMF power bomb header and exhaust muffler, and Vapor Trail Tech , lights + fork socks Expected Maintenance: Top End Rebuild, Timing, Valves adjusted [Have not done compression test, but i would expect new top to be necessary] obvious things such as Brake Pads, Fluids, Chain/Sprockets, Tries, Heavy Tubes Does This Bike Seem Worthy Of Such A Trip? Or am i better off selling to find a newer model?

Is My DRZ400-E Worthy of the Trans America Trail?

My main concern about the top end, along with anything, is reliability. Considering I'll be riding 6-10hr days for about a month and a half; new rings, gaskets, and potential jug were some of the first repairs that came to mind. The compression test and a professionals opinion could prove otherwise And thanks for the jetting tip!
  7. Hello all! My name is Miles and I need some help gauging what to expect for condition/"reliability" you could say, of my DRZ400E for cross country travel! I am looking into traveling the Trans America Trail. I'm from Rhode Island and found an alternate rout where I can start on the West border of Connecticut. Ending in Colorado, to Nevada, then California; and cruising something along the lines of RT66 back. [just for reference, don't mean to ramble] The Machine: 2003 DRZ400-E ~6k miles total - 5k lightly ridden, never seen dirt - 0.8k %100 hard off road [past year] Frequent Oil changes, Air Filter changes {I ride with the guy I purchased it from nearly daily. He was good about maintenance on the regular, but also pushe the bike in the woods just as much!} Front and Rear Suspension rebuilt, carburetor rebuilt all last year Stock everything except FMF power bomb header and exhaust muffler, and Vapor Trail Tech, lights + fork socks Expected Maintenance: Top End Rebuild, Timing, Valves adjusted [Have not done compression test, but i would expect new top to be necessary] obvious things such as Brake Pads, Fluids, Chain/Sprockets, Tries, Heavy Tubes From this information, And Any You Can Think Of To Ask, does this DRZ have potential for the Trans America Trail; a ~6'000 dirt, then ~4,000 road return trip?! Or would I be better off selling it for a newer model? Thanks! -Miles

    1999 DR650se clutch dragging symtoms?

    Thanks for the response!

    1999 DR650se clutch dragging symtoms?

I have a 1999 DR650se with dynojet, supertrapper exhaust, and k&n air filter. Everything else stock (except tires/handlebars) If i suspend the rear tire on a stand, pull in the clutch, and shift into first, the tire will spin! Not as fast or with as much power as fully released [power increases smoothly and gradually as lever is released] Is this a symptom of clutch dragging? I have the lever freeplay in spec [10-15mm]
