Mostly ride bicycles, but I'm getting into riding things I don't have to pedal.

    XT600 1984 - whiskey throttle and a gravel gripper!
  1. Do you think it's the head gasket? If so do I have to do a complete engine rebuild and would it be best to buy an entire gasket kit?
  2. Hi, I recently rode my XT600 from Denton, Tx. to San Antonio and back. I didn't realize I was losing oil until my bike gave out on me. I had someone run and grab the appropriate oil and started it back up. It seemed to have a small leak at the time. So I figured I'd be able to ride it back home. 30 mins into the ride I saw smoke at a stop sign. I shut the bike down and looked for the source of the leaks. I'm new to this, but I found the clutch-cover gasket was actually sticking out, so I know I have to replace that, as it -- of course -- was leaking. (Any experience with this bike and replacing the clutch cover-gasket would be appreciated.) But, there is also a leak coming from the engine close to where the exhaust pipes connect. This is the one I'm most concerned about. I'll try an get pictures tomorrow. It's pretty close to the center of the engine by a few bolts. Forgive me I'm motorcycle ignorant and don't know what I'm looking at. I hope I didn't get her too hot and crack the engine. :\ (leak located front and center near the front forks of the bike. It's in a place where it easily runs down and onto the exhaust.) Also, while I was riding, before the leak I noticed the engine sputtered just a hair around 4.5 to 6 rpms. This was at about 60-70 mph. Any input or advice would be much appreciated. Since I don't talk bike the repair manual is a bit hard to follow. I'll post pictures when i have more light tomorrow. Thanks for any help you guys can provide. Cheers, Stefan.
