  1. Yea linesmans make good money, the higher the voltage the higher the pay. I've worked with some guys setting poles in Toronto and they all drive nice lifted trucks but they travelled a lot. They would work Monday to Thursday and stay at hotels then travel home on Fridays or work half days. Starting a business takes time but you can do it slowly. Start on the side and build up till you your side work takes over your regular work. Build up your tool collection especially when in co-op. The government will pay for a lot of your tools or you write them off at tax time. Talk to some old timers looking to retire and try to work with them but don't buy a business. Just as much to start on your own as it is to buy a business. Be good at what you do and word will spread through your family and friends. It's doable but takes time.
  2. So I also live in southern Ontario and my job starts at around $60,000 per year but that doesn't include overtime and there is a lot of overtime available. Top rate is in 5 years and is over $70,000. But the guys in these positions are making over $100,000 with the overtime and standby work that we do. The more you work the more you make. Trades are great especially HVAC, plumber, electrician or gas fitter because you can make good money especially through a union or go on your own and start your own business. Plus you won't be burdened by a huge debt when you done school unlike university. And since there's a shortage, there are a lot of government programs and assistance to getting into the trades. But remember that it is hard, physical work and you don't always get to work in the nicest places. Government jobs are great too if you can get in. Is there anything your leaning towards more?
  3. I'm a Utility Service Rep for the local gas company. Great pay, great benefits and they provide all the training but not sure if it's the same where you live. It's taken me a long time to find work I enjoy. I'll be 30 this year I just started with this company last fall. I've been working since I was teen starting in the family landscaping business then being a automotive mechanic, farming, heavy equipment operator, retail, CNC Machinist, Landscape Design and Sales, HydroVac operator, Stone Slinger driver and now with the gas company where I plan to stay for a long time. I plan to stay because of how good this company is to its employees. I also enjoy the work even though I never dreamed of doing this work for a living. I remember in high school always being told to find what you love and make that your job. That's crap. Find a job you can enjoy that makes good money so you enjoy life outside of work. There are those few that manage to do what they love and make money at it. But for the rest of us we work to support ourselves, our families and our hobbies. I learned this from a good friend of mine. He is a prison guard which is not the glamorous job but it pays well and gives him lots of time off to hunt and fish. He built a beautiful house out in the woods with a fishing pond and brew shed to make beer. His original dream job: pilot. I would look for jobs that in demand like trades. Here in Canada there is a major shortage of trades worker like plumbers and electricians especially in the industrial sector. And if your willing to travel or move around you can make a lot of money. Best part is schooling here for trades is a co-op program. So you work and go to school at the same time meaning you won't come out with a huge debt and will be making over $100,000 a year when fully trained. Nursing and healthcare is a another good area especially for male nurses. Not many around and are sought after. Plus people are always going to be sick.   5. Hi all I'm looking for any help with assembling my transmission. Does anybody have pictures or step by step guide they can share with me? I have the manual but it doesn't seem to be helping. A couple questions that stand out: Should all the shift forks marking face to the left? When the gears are all assembled without the shift forks installed, should the gears all line up and spin freely? I've assembled and disassembled this a couple times now and every time I try to run it through the gear on the bench it doesn't shift all the way up or down or the shafts will spin and then bind up. I have the service manual but find it very vague in this area. Please, any help would be appreciated Thank-you

    You could try to find the same colour vinyl from a fabric store, use the old seat cover as a template to cut-out the material. I think there's a way to iron on or paint the lettering onto the new vinyl.
  7. Moved forward today and put the piston in and cylinder. Still having trouble with the kick starter trying to sort how that lines up.
  8. Question for you guys. I'm getting things back together. I am trying to figure out how the kickstart shaft goes in. The shop manual says to set it by rotating the shaft counterclockwise but the pictures show it rotate clockwise so which is it? Also, the four bolts that hold the clutch springs down, what is the torque spec on them? And they have to go all the way down right?

It's getting harder and harder to find some of these gaskets and I'm open to make templates for other older bikes and create a library. Please let me know. Thanks

  12. Question for you guys. Can I replace the paper gasket between the cases with a silicone engine gasket product? Or try to preserve the original one
  13. Finally had some time to start diving into building the motor. Started looking at the first motor that was mostly together and noticed a lot of side to side play in the crankshaft. Looked a little closer and notice a couple of the pin bearings missing. Checked the other motor thats in pieces and luckily the crank was nice and tight. Started pulling the covers off and noticed metal and even bolts in the bottom of the case. The clutch basket had a couple broken studs and the case split apart really easily. Looks like someone has already been inside this motor. PO told me this one just needed the head replaced and the other needed a countershaft(both parts were purchased only he told me recently he found the new counter shaft in his garage, still needs to get it to me). Glad to have the second machine. Looks like I'll only be building the one bike for now. Unless I can find another engine(maybe even a newer 400cc if it will fit) for now I will continue with this build. Hopefully I can have it ready by the fall.
