  1. Working on this old 79 XL500. I got a rusty header pipe that I've stripped down and getting it ready to paint. Can anyone point me to fairly cost effective rear section? It doesn't have to be stock. I see I can pick up aftermarket spark arresters - but how do I get the mid pipe for connecting the spark arrester to the header? Would a muffler shop have 1.25" pipe on hand? Thanks for any input.
  2. Hey everybody. Working on an '81 XR500 with no spark. Trying to find out what is the correct ohm reading on each side of the coil? Got a Clymer shop manual on it which references correct reading in Table 6. God bless Clymer - there is no table 6! On the front side of the coil I'm getting 2.6-2.7 ohms and it's holding resistance. On the plug wire side it won't ohm at all. Thanks in advance for any input.
  3. XR500 no spark troubleshooting.
  4. tested the XL500 for comparison (it runs) and it doesn't ohm on the spark plug side either. But it will on the front side at 2.2 ohms. So I'm wondering on these do they even ohm on the plug wire side?
  5. that's the ticket. thanks.
  6. Readily available parts I have learned are one of the major hurdles on these old ones. I'm doing an old beater XL500 and I'm paying premium for old rusty parts. Good luck with that 400 though. When I was kid the lead guy in our group had a 76 IT400 and that thing would flat go.
  7. I'm following this one. I've got the same bike in much rougher condition. Post a phone video of the rattle if you can. I would be interested in hearing it as mine makes some noise too.
  8. Hi all. I picked up what I believe to be a 79 XL500 that has been beaten practically to death. The motor runs good, has good compression, starts and drives good through all the gears. But everything else is rough. I fondly, and incorrectly thought I was going to buy this old girl and restore it. It appears I was very wrong. There are apparently no parts available. So what do you guys do? For instance - the muffler is rusty and has some holes in the header pipe. I could spend time and money patching it up and it will be just that - a patched up turd. But I can't find a muffler. Not new. What to do?! Ugh!!!
  9. I think I found a super trapp with a mid pipe aftermarket for about the same cost as an old one. It's 3 bills on Ebay. My header is on the way. Will there be mesh gaskets in there when I pull the old one, that I will need to replace? I gotta get a book on this thing too.
  10. thats a great page tons of info and pics. thx. I bought a header pipe from Oregon - it's on the way. It will need a lot of Ospho for sure. But I'm not sure now - how to get from there back. There are some old silencers on Ebay for $300 which is nuts. I wish I knew how to do a midpipe and then use an aftermarket silencer. You see it on all the pictures guys have them all tricked out. I'd like to go that route, but, heck where to start? It's like it would need (2) 45's to bend up and then back.
  11. Can anyone point me to a research website or doc - related to the exhaust for a 79 XL 500? I am certain that it's a 79. And member ossagp said that an XR header will fit the XL which is great. However, how far can I go in years to where it will still fit? I'm fairly sure it's the same for 79-81. But - can I run say an 84 header pipe on the 79? I just to need figure out which years run the same header pipes. Thank you in advance.
  12. Great. Thank you. there seems to be better quality XR headers on Ebay at the moment than XL. And then I can fab it from there back like your saying with a supertrap or something. That Predator from the UK looks nice. Haven't been able to get a response from them, so it's looking like Ebay.
  13. would anyone happen to know - will the 79-81 XR500 header pipe work on 79-81 XL500? Would live to find a new repro.
  14. I got nothing. Spent better part of the weekend online looking. Plenty of rusty overpriced junk on Ebay. I already have that. Would love to get a reproduction new.
