  1. Looks great... did you add the SW Motech sub-frame stiffener kit yet...? I installed one on my 2017 at the same time I added a PM Rack for the rear... I mounted the turn signals to the rack so everything is integrated... I did have to buy longer bolts for the blinkers, rack, and sub-frame kit but it went good. How do you like the 4.7 gal Clarke?... I'm seriously considering this as my bike has 36 mpg so far... no where near the reported 50 that people say it should get. great looking bike...
  2. I'm up in Salem Oregon... I looked for years and waited and waited for a street legal 450 but it never came. I decided late last year that I was missing out... being a "Honda" guy, I decided on the 650L. Looked for the great deal on a used on and all I ever saw was $4200 for a jacked 2005 or high mile 06 for 5k... I just pulled the plug and bought the 2017. and there is basically no change from other years... but I love this thing. Is it a little dated?... maybe compared to the KTM's or the BMW's but you know what... it's a Honda and it works when I want it to. I changed the bars to Renthal Windham / Reed bend (like my motocross bikes), footpegs to IMS, added a SW-Motech subframe stiffener, and a PM Racks.com tail rack, a Moose Racing skid plate, Wolfman E12 saddle bags and a Twin Air air filter.... Next is the emissions block off kit, a Clark Racing 4.7 gal take, and some Roto Pax 1-gal water and fuel jugs... Just in time for spring riding

  4. I just installed the SW Motech sub frame braces on my 2017... they are pretty simple but you might have to get longer hardware..(8mm x 80mm I believe) I installed a rear rack on my bike and the rack and the sub frame stiffeners use the same holes as the blinker mounts. When you do that you need even longer bolts and also spacers to hold the blinker brackets off the tail rack. Remember to use Blue Loctite on the nuts. If you add an aftermarket pipe to the bike later or if it has one now, you can move the mounting hole on the bottom of the exhaust side brace by drilling a new access hole and trimming off the excess bracket on the bottom. Or you can get a little fancy by bending the exhaust side brace arm in a couple places and use the same mounting holes... I'd stay away from heating the bracket / arm with a torch, as that will take some of the strength out of the part.
  5. Yamaha WR's are a good bet... but you can't go wrong with a 250 smoker... they run forever, easy maintenance, and you can up grade with better pipes, tires, reeds, all that stuff... I was exactly like you... got out of the game for about 10-12 years and picked it right back up... I have 2- CRF 250R's 1- CRF 450R and a CR 250R, and a brand new XR650L.... when I want to rip a motocross track up, the CR250 works for me... it's faster than the 250 4-strokes and more fun than the 450R... and someone said above... only a handful of riders and handle a 450 4-stroke to its limits... other than that its just what you want to ride... Check Craigslist and pick something up and have fun on it....
  6. I'm in the same boat here... I like the look of the stock tank... don't want a big tank but need more than the 2.8 stocker... I have 175 miles on my 2017 650L and I had to switch onto reserve after 68 miles.... that is no where near acceptable. Leaning towards the Clarke 4.7 and try to find some kind of graphics that won't bubble and melt off of it.
  7. You went to Alaska with the XR650L?
  8. My 2017 is a dog.... just a bigger version of the XR75 I had when I was 10.... but I didn't buy it to race and I don't want something as snappy as my motocross bike while out on the road. I do want to change the tires out after this set wears out so I was following this all the way to the end here and in the pictures that guys' knuckles remind me the first tire I changed by myself...lol then I realized he must have banged them up when he slid out.... funny though for a second... I thought he'd messed them up swaping the tubes out.
