Buying used bike. Have $3500. What to get?

I got most of the pop out. Bike was super lean Put an after market fuel screw on so I can adjust by hand. And swapped the slow jet to a 45. Still has a little pop here and there but I’m much happier with it. Thanks again for the great advice.

If you had a link on that post it didn’t go thru.

I’ve heard that. I’m sure it’s fine but seems to be more than any other bike I’ve seen or heard.

Hi guys. For those that remember I picked up a 08crf450r (1st 4t I’ve owend) earlier this year. The bike seems to run fine for the most part but has what I consider a lot of decel pop. Any ideas how to solve this? Things I’ve tried. Re-jetted carb. JD kit. #185 main, #42 slow, red needle. per JD recommendation Carb is clean New spark plug New exhaust pipe gasket New silencer FMF Q4 (I replaced this because previous owner modified the stock silencer) Fuel tank is clean I’ve tried adjusting fuel screw and idle. These are all things I’ve read could potentially help. None seemed to work. Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the advice. Now the initial panic is gone I'm going to do just that. All fluids, jets, plug, air filter, and give the bike the best once over I can. Also considering a new slip on, any thought on one? the dude I bought it from put an after market spark arrestor on and it's loud. Much louder then my buddies bike (which is stock).

Okay guys tell me if this sounds right. I drained and replaced the coolant (maxima coolanal). Warmed up the bike ride it for several minutes, let it idle for a few, and no problems. No spewing of coolant or anything. Checked the coolant levels after the bike cooled down and didn't lose a drop.

Is that really it? I read that and have a hard time believing it. Like I said it didn't happen at the owners house. I also called my buddy who has the same bike and his doesn't do it. He tried to get his to over heat and it wouldn't. Is there anything else I should look for? Thanks again

Well ended up picking up an 08 crf450r for $2900. Before buying I looked over the bike best I could and everything seemed to be in great shape. Started up easy and sounded good. After a short test ride i felt the idle was a little high. I told the seller and he adjusted it slightly. Everything seemed great. I bought it. Brought home and fired it up about 2hrs latter. Started first kick. All good. Once warm I went to dial the idle in a little more and the bike seemed to start overheating. Or at least large amounts of radiator fluid start spilling out of the over flow tube. WTF? Any thoughts guys? I'm hoping I didn't buy a lemon. Bike didn't do this as I was test riding or as the bike was sitting at idle at the previous owners house. Thanks guys.

Is this the article you guys are talking about? Interesting info either way. http://motocrossactionmag.com/you-asked-for-it-motocross-actions-two-stroke-versus-four-stroke-shootout-yamaha-yz250-versus-yamaha-yz250f/

Been seeing some nice 4t 250's in my range. Do you guys think one could pull my 220lb ass around. Ive seen the 2t vs 4t 250 write ups. But I'm betting the riders are 150lb tops. I'd love to ride one though and try it. When I rode my buddies 08 cr450 he also had his 02 cr250 2t out that day. Rode them back to back and I could go either way. Both bikes had their positives. I'll probably just go with the best of either I can find for the cash. Anyone in so cal with one to sale? Haha

You guys are nailing this right on the head. My kids are beginners and pretty slow still. This last season I got them riding and shifting. My son is just getting air under the tires and thinks he's clearing a triple. Which is just awesome to see. Im having a hard time finding a yz250. They either need to be rebuilt or have been so tricked out they want $5k for them. I've only ridden one 4t and it was a 08 crf450. Awesome bike that is in the price range but I'm not sure on the 4t maintenance since I've only worked on 2t. I'm a big dude I think a 4t250 would be too small. But have never ridden one. Thanks for the advice.
  12. Hi all, first time posting. Have read many, many posts. Im buying a used bike and have maximum $3500 to spend. What should I get? Last bike I owned was a 96 rm250. Bought bikes for my kids beginning of last season now looking for mine. I'm 40yrs old I used to race motocross (novice) but have been out of the scene for 15 years. Plan on riding with the kids and occasionally hitting a track. Torn between 2 stroke & 4 stroke & year & mfr. thanks in advance for opinions.
