Couple questions for a new guy

Thank you everyone for the advice and awesome pic's! Really hope something works out for me at the demo, in the back of my mind I really want one of the 2 strokes to stand out as "The bike" but we'll see. For me the lighter it feels the better so maybe that 200 has my name on it, but I was a bit of a lugger when I had the 350, problem was that bike wasn't a lugger. I'm sure in a lot of ways the XT will appeal to me but I don't want another trials bike like suspension, already got one of those. March can't get here soon enough!

Couple questions for a new guy

Edgecombe = Sweet looking bike! highmarker = One guy rides a 250x (It was ok, not that exciting). Other buddy rides a YZ250, I found that thing to be a handful in the woods. Cullins = My Trials bike is a 300 2t (18 Scorpa factory). I have high hopes for the 200 as long as it's not on or off as far as power delivery goes. I actually seem to notice the weight of other bikes more than the power, truth is any of the bikes I've rode have enough power, but feel like tanks. The YZ wasn't bad but the on/off power was difficult for me to deal with in the woods. I was either barely moving, or watching my life flash before my eye's as trees went whizzing by. I prob owe the guy who owns it a new clutch, getting it around our trials loop was work. So any suggestions on how I can tell how the bikes setup to deliver power on the 2t's just by looking at the power valve? Redhurricane = How's the single life treating you? Clearly you have your priorities in line..lol
  3. Pretend for a minute that you're a novice dirt bike rider, middle aged, about 6'2" 220lbs, with only maybe 30hrs on a modern orange 350. All your dirt experience is on a trials bike that you've been riding weekly for a couple years and you're going to a beta demo day in March to find the dirt bike that's your future (hopefully). You don't really need a plated bike but it wouldn't be a bad thing either as your plan is single track woods riding with buddies. What would be on your radar first? Providing that didn't work out what bikes would you be looking at after that since you really have no preference 2t or 4 due to your lack of experience. I understand this is a "What motorcycle should I buy" question but posting here as it's beta specific. Last question; If I ride a 2t how can I determine if the power is setup to be more in your face or softer when looking at the power valve, or is this even something I should take into account when trying one out?

Yea, seems like most everyone with a ktm 200 really likes them, I'm sure their nice. I suppose Beta will have one of their new 200's at the demo but who knows? They said something like 20 bikes, I'm really only looking to ride 4 or 5 not counting their trials bikes which I really like and have rode a few of, not sure I would trade my Scorpa for one but who knows? Hoping I can get them to tune down the power valves on the 2 strokes before I ride them but that may be asking a lot. No matter what I should have more information at the end of day, or be more confused. Nobade - Yea that's the truth, everything feels like a heavy beast when you do that comparison. I thought I was getting a trials bike to help me learn to better ride a dirt bike. Turns out I was getting a trials bike to ride a trials bike.

So not to leave this open ended after getting a lot of good advice from everyone. I got lucky! There's a Beta demo day happening reasonably close to me the first week of march, that should give me a chance to make a educated decision on my next bike. If I don't like any of those, I'll prob go the WR250F or YZ250FX route. Tks for all the ideas/help!

After an afternoon on a YZ250, I have a hard time even thinking about a 300cc 2 stroke.

Tks everyone... SilvFx, Yes my trials bike is a 2 stroke, had a lot to do with why I now like 2 strokes over the 350 4 stroke I had. I know that's apples and oranges comparing the two, but that 350 was a pain to keep from stalling even compared to the Yz250 I rode, I think it prob needed the Vortex ECU to run properly. I was also thinking the less weight the better. Doc_d, I ride with the Southern Indiana Trials Team, south if Indy. I wasn't so much the power of the 350 although it was a lot for me, just never could keep it running when things slowed down. I hear the XCF-W you have doesn't have this problem as it was never meant to be street legal. XCF-W 250?
  9. 1. What is your skill Level (be honest)? Novice on a dirt bike (Sportsman sections on a trials bike) 2. What's your height & weight? 6'2 220lbs 3. What year, make, & model of motorcycle are you coming from? And, what do you want the new bike to do better? Trials 300 Scorpa, better on trails. 4. What's your ballpark budget? Whatever, I always buy new and sell at a loss...lol 5. What types of terrain will you be riding? Single track woods 6. Will you be racing or just play riding? Just playing I got into the dirt bike thing at 50, been riding road bikes for years but gave that up after moving back east. Bought a 350 exc-f to ride with my buddies and decided that was to much of everything for a new woods rider like myself. Did a lot of reading on the subject and decided a trials bike would be a decent way to start learning some of the skills I didn't have in the woods. Love the hell out of riding my trials bike and have been doing for a couple years at least a few times a week in trials areas and single track, it's so much fun! Still wanting a dirt bike to ride with other guys that don't have trials bikes. I've been thinking about... Beta Xtrainer (Love my 2 stroke trials bike) WR250F, CRF250X (These two seem to be the logical choice based on all the reading and videos) I'd love to stay on a 2 stroke but I'm thinking anything new and I'll be back in the same situation I was with the 350, to much of a good thing. I've ridden a 2011 YZ250 a bit and honestly it was a handful in the woods for me, more of a point and shoot and hang the F#$% on thing. The suspension on the Xtrainer scares me, I already have a 300cc trials bike not sure a bigger heavier trials bike like thing is the answer. I even briefly thought about a 250rr Beta and screwing the power valve down to the point it never hits, but that prob a stupid decision too. If I could find a clean KDX200/220 I'd give that a try even though I hate buying used. So what do you guys think?

    Trials Crosstraining

After purchasing a trials bike my KTM sat for almost 6 months, I just sold it. I posted on this thread way back in February about wanting to try a trials bike. I took everyone's advice, found a local club, joined them for an afternoon, bought a bike 2 days later and haven't looked back. These guys ride rain or shine at least 2 days a week and are awesome at helping a new guy out, already rode my first "gate trial" and our group is hosting a big event in Sept. So much fun!

    My first trials bike!

Since there isn't much action on this forum, I figured since I had something interesting to post I would. My new to me 17 Scorpa, bought from RYP last Friday! This is my first trials bike and I've only been out in the woods on it once so far with a great bunch of guys here in south/central Indiana and had a great time. What everyone has been saying about trials riders being super helpful and eager to help a new guy out has been spot on. They've gone way above and beyond to make me feel welcome and give me riding tips, great guys to ride with and I'm very happy to have hooked up with them. While I'm at it I'd like to also mention Kevin and Ryan at RYP, super helpful and not just because I was buying a bike, in fact, the first time I was there I didn't buy anything, Kevin talked with me for over 2hrs about the bikes and gear they have, showed me around the place and introduced me to everyone. Ryan helped me pick out boots and a helmet and get my bike setup. Meeting and talking with those guys put me at ease about buying a used bike from them, I've no doubt service after the sell will be outstanding if needed. So here it is with it's slightly bigger brother, don't make fun of my garage, it's been a long winter.

    Trials Crosstraining

So Saturday is my dumb question day...here goes As mentioned earlier, looking for my first trials bike, consensus says 200 but a 250 will do (6'2" 225lbs). In the MX world there's a big difference between a between a 250 2t and a 250 4t out of the box, does this apply to trials also? Is say a 250 Evo comparable to a 260 Montesa? I'm guessing for whatever reason this is true solely based on the fact that there is no 450 Montesa that competes against the 300 smokers. But I don't really understand why? As a general rule and the way i understand things, a 2t will make more power than a 4t per cc, but in the trials world there doesn't seem to be that delta. I know 4t's have come a long way in matching the 2t for outright power due to the much higher redline on the 4's, but is that what's required by the 4t's to make them competitive to 2t's in the trials world also? Rev the guts out of it?

    Trials Crosstraining

Frustrating isn't a problem for me, I'm old (51) and just starting out on a dirtbike and have developed patience (no choice). I rode sportbikes all my life and 3 wheelers when I was young, moved to the country in southern Indiana found some guys my age and started riding dirtbikes with them, they're way better than I am but we all have a blast. Since I have no practical experience on a trials bike I was thinking the Evo Sport (seat/tank) would allow me to practice/play around on my 6 acres and take it to the trails when we're not going to be hitting any roads when we go riding. I have a lot of free time to practice (I'm single) and have plenty of room to build about any obstacles I want. I doubt I'd ever do any formal trials riding as I don't think there are any clubs in my area, at least that I've found but would love to try that. I guess I'm looking to make up for years of lost time not riding dirtbikes, or maybe even making the trials bike my primary ride as I'm already slow so I got that part nailed and using the 350 for more dual sport riding where a trials bike wouldn't be practical. There's a Beta dealer in Louisville, thinking about riding over there today and seeing what they got or if they carry any used stuff. Tks everyone for all the info, really appreciate it, keep it coming.
