Glad you mentioned the the relationship between the needle and AS. I recently switched to a 38PJ with my AS at 1.5 bike ran well and started easy (for the first time) with the button. Shortly after, I decided to richen my needle up by 1 clip due to the cold weather. I rode it just around my neighborhood and noticed the idle way to low and the bike is back to cranking with the button but not easily starting with it (bike starts first kick every time with the kicker). I assumed it was the AS needing adjusted again but didnt have time that night to mess with it. Its had me wondering since that night so I'm glad to read this.

    Ktm 300 Clutch

I noticed the same thing after purchasing a used 300 figured I was in for a clutch and or slave cyl bleeding/rebuild. Once the oil and clutch warmed up from running the motor it moved much easier. Then read on here It was normal.
  3. How worried should someone be about the bottom end with dirt ingestion like this, or is more abuse going to be shown on the topend?
  4. Thank you for the reply, I should have updated this thread. I ended up finding a 300 xcw that I bought. Very happy I did, with the adjustability of the power valve and the mapping I'm able to ease back into riding even in the very wet slick conditions we have right now.
  5. On my on 09xcw when I pull the little switch next to the head light my little position light is all that comes on no big bulb. Even if the big bulb was burned out what's the point of having the little light come on with the switch since I'm guessing the big bulb is suppose to be on with the switch?

Does this sound like Power valve rattling

Thank you for the reply. I found out it was chain slap tho. Easy to tell once ppl pointed me in that direction.

Well chain slap is the culprit. It's amazing how it sounds like it's right in the engine but once I leaned back and looked I could not only see the chain jumping but I could also hear the sound even louder. This was all on the road so I think it's even easier to pick up the sound there since that's where I heard it before. This usually was happening in 4th and 5th, but once I figured out it was just chain slap if I tried real hard I could just barely get it to do it in 3rd. I'm planning on switching from the 14t countershaft sprocket that's on it now back to a 13t (not because of the chain slap but to bring the gearing back down to stock) I'm guessing with having lower gearing it might help with the slapping. Either way I'm just glad that's all it is. Thank you for all the replies everyone.

Yes, I had fresh 93 oct in the bike.

Lol. That sounds good to me. I'll try tomorrow to see which it is for sure. If I am detonating I may try to richen it up a bit just to be safe.

You've described exactly what I was trying to say in an earlier post, admittedly i would never lugg the bike that low in those gears unless i had it in the wrong gear. I'm guessing that the bike is lean right now in this temp. I'm not counting out chain slap either tho. If I AM in fact detonating when doing this (which like I said I would never normally do) should I be concerned? Basically if I dont hear it am I ok.

Then damn I gotta think its chain slap. I would begin to think gears but it went away when rpms were up.

Could it be possible to lug the motor down so much that It could start detonating? I was going slow enough that in 4th with the throttle turned about 3/8 open it was losing momentum going uphill on the rd. Really can't wait to get out tomorrow hopefully to try to figure this out.

Does this sound like Power valve rattling

Thanks everyone, I'm going to try to get out tomorrow to try it. The whole time I was in the woods I never heard the noise at all but I was never in a gear that high. I know that I was really lugging the bike out in 4th and 5th. Like I said when I ran thru 4th and 5th with more rpm there was no noise. I was able to recreate the noise again by lugging it out in 4th. I never thought to look at the chain cause I never figured it would sound like valve clatter.

Could someone tell me the difference between the N2ZJ and N2ZW needles? I just bought a 09 300xcw and I'm concerned it may be running a bit lean with the cold weather the bike has the n2zj in it now. Theres no bog when I walk the throttle open, the bike seems to rev cleanly, it smokes when warming up but then the smoke goes away. 35PJ 165MJ AS 3/4 turn out 1000ft elevation 30 to 45F degrees Basically just wanting to know what to look for if the bikes too lean. I know that at about 1/8 throttle the bike is quite twitchy but really good throttle response and I have a very very slight hanging idle after pulling in the clutch. I'm thinking I could probably step up to the 38pj.

The more everyone mentions it the more I'm thinking it might of been chain slap. I went and bounced my chain around and as it was hitting off the underside guide it sounded like the noise I was hearing but way faster. I think just to be safe I'll probably still follow the owners manual chart to richen up my jetting for the colder months. I think I just need to stop worrying so damn much and just ride it. The bike only has 80 hrs on it.
