    XL600R/XR600R Dual Carb Question

Hello everyone! Real life got in the way and I had to take a step back from this project for a bit. However, I am back on the train! Still focusing on getting the absolute most out of this motor, and I have some questions. 1.) What is the biggest, most aggressive cam I can use? 2.) Without worrying about fitment what are the two best carbs I can use? 3.) I've been reading about early XR's having week transmissions, and blowing teeth right off the gears. Supposedly the transmissions from later XR600's and even XR650'S are drop in. Does this ring true, and is it worth it? Thank you!!

Also, is there a better place for seals than 4into1? These are pretty much the only seal kits I could find for this bike. https://4into1.com/gearshift-crankcase-cylinder-block-oil-seal-14x28x7-honda-xl100-250-350-xr250-400-500r-600r-650l-cb100-125s-350f-360-550sc-650sc-700sc-750/ https://4into1.com/engine-oil-seal-kit-honda-xl600r-xr600r/

I was reading online that painting might actually insulate the motor and cause higher temps? Any credence to that? Might it be worth leaving the fins unpainted?

Everything but the covers came out amazing, but thats more of the covers being abuse than anything else. All contact surfaces for gaskets look great. The coating on the inside was, chipping in some places or atleast starting to peel so I had that removed as well. Honestly it looks great. As for high temp paint just normal duplicolor or is there a suggested brand? I've used appliance epoxy on other bikes for a lot of stuff but I'm not sure how that will fare on a motor.

    XL600R/XR600R Dual Carb Question

Ended up supporting the swing arm on a vise and pounded it out using a sledghammer, and a punch! Now, the crank case and covers are back from getting cleaned. A local guy ended up using soda blasting to remove most of the heavy mess followed by vapor honing to get that awesome finish. Now that I'm ready to start reassembling everytging, I want to start ordering all the new bearings and seals. I think I have most everything but I don't want shipping times to delay this build so please let me know if I'm missing anything. 2 x bearings for the balancer 1 x rightside crank bearing (as far as I have read the left one is non-replaceable) Bearing and seal for kickstarter Bearing and seal for counter shaft Bearing and seal for clutch arm. Also any thoughts on paint vs powdercoat for the motor? Was originally going to say powdercoat but I heard someone suggest using paint because it would be less likely chip and easier to retouch.

Used the second method you outlined, and a sledgehammer, and the swingarm bolt came out easily. However the bolt for the linkage is absolutely stuck. An pneumatic impact won't even spin it, and pounding it out has proven fruitless even with the sledge. Any suggestions? Thank you!

    XL600R/XR600R Dual Carb Question

Thank you. I was originally going to soda blast it but you recommended vapor honing earlier in the thread, just having trouble finding someone around me that does it. And on a different note, do you have any tips on getting the swingarm off of the xr600r? I took the nut off but for the life of me can't hammer the bolt out. Same for the bolt that connects the linkage to the swingarm. Basically I'm trying to remove only the swingarm for now, not worries about the linkages. These two bolts.

    XL600R/XR600R Dual Carb Question

Thank you on both accounts! Just like you said the flat blade worked perfect on the two seals, a wrench worked great on the brown seal, and flat blade on an impact took care of the plugs. So before I send these parts to be soda blasted or vapor honed, I just have two more questions. Should I remove the dowels, or should the soda blasting or vapor honing do a good enough job to clean them and prevent them from binding the case halves again? And is there anyway to remove the oil tube at the top of the crank case and replace it? Mine is pretty well corroded and I'm not sure if it will cause an issue. Thank you.

    XL600R/XR600R Dual Carb Question

Happy St. Patricks Day! I've been removing most of the parts from the covers, and crank case, but I've run into a few issues I need some help with! The first two pictures are seals that I'm not sure how to get out. The third picture is an o ring I think that was held in place by a snap ring, that I have removed but I still cannot remove the o ring itself. Lastly are the two plugs on the stator cover. I've tried using a washer with a rod through it to help spin them off as well as penetrating oil but they won't budge. As always, thank you for the help!

    XL600R/XR600R Dual Carb Question

Ultimately just used the outer piece, an impact wrench, and a strap wrench to pop the flywheel off. Used the case separator to push the crank out, and the blind bearing puller to start pulling bearings. Once everything has been removed I want to get it blasted. I was gonna do soda blasting as to not damage anything. Or would normal sandblasting be okay? Thank you!

    XL600R/XR600R Dual Carb Question

Coins and washers both simply get deformed as the puller pushes them into the hole. Tried a bolt so there was a little more meat and the bolt itself is starting to deform.

    XL600R/XR600R Dual Carb Question

So I purchased that exact tool off of ebay and it arrived today, I threaded the outer portion in and the center bolt bottoms out before it hits anything. Am I missing something? Thank you!

    XL600R/XR600R Dual Carb Question

Thank you! So looking online, I was able to find a flywheel puller. This one is the one I'm looking to purchase, but it seems to missing the threaded collar yours has. I also found this one. And as for bearing puller, I found this one. Would these tools work? Again, I appreciate the help.
