    ‘03 XR400 Burnt Oil Smell Riding

    That headlight is pretty cool but it blocks the oil cooler. When you get CR’s hot they first start smoking out of the crankcase breather (mentioned above) and eventually weaken the rings and just burn the oil. Leaky valve guide seals are a thing as well, especially when ridden hard and then just shut off without being able to cool down a bit. I hope it’s just a little over filled🤞🏻 When you get XR’s hot, that is (stupid autocorrect)

    Glad you got out but then you had little choice. I’ve been there a few times myself. Looking at the last two pics, your rear tire looks pretty smoked.

    Back in my road racing days we had cool-shirts that had raised piping to promote air circulation under our leathers. I still have one that I wear on super hot days. The car racing guys have more of what you’re talking about with their under-layers (actual name is cool shirt) that have continuous piping sewn into them for water circulation. Neat application of space suit tech, but bulky and heavy.
  4. I feel ya. I got so frustrated when I lived in Frederick that I sold my dirt bike. Maryland is a tough place to love motorcycles indeed.
  5. I would have to agree that the proliferation of side by sides kind of kills the theory of prohibitive expense. It seems to be a culture and access issue. Back in my youth (please read in your best “get off my lawn” curmudgeonly voice) access to riding areas was free and easy. I grew up in southern Maine and at the end of my street you could jump on a snowmobile trail that would take you to the power lines which would, in turn, open up access to all of New England. Heck, people would tack signs to the towers directing you to the nearest town, accessible gas stations, and food. That’s all gone now that everyone is scared of being sued if someone’s kid gets injured. Everything is posted-no trespassing. Add to that the hyper safety sensitive culture that sprung up under the generation of helicopter parents, the general frowning upon of interest in the trades from guidance councilors, the near fatal wound to the motorcycle industry that came with and lingered after the sub-prime fiasco, the showrooms being cleared of all machines geared towards children just before Christmas ‘09 to protect them from trace amounts of lead (thanks, Congress...), and the doubling of the cost of dirt bikes, it’s amazing that any kids ride at all. Several small town dealers I have dropped in on have given up on motorcycles entirely. All the masses seem to be buying is quads and side by sides. It is sad. I have been infatuated with motorcycles since I was 4 (perhaps even earlier but that’s when I remember the fever setting in) and they have been the catalyst for my greatest adventures and best friends. I can’t imagine how my life would have been thus far without them but I imagine it would not have been nearly as much fun. With this in mind I do what I can to help those seeking to dabble in the motorbike world but without places to ride, access to realistically affordable machines, and a group of willing and enthusiastic participants, it’s a uphill battle. Glad I was around for the golden years.
  6. Make sure that is a digital (gps based) compass if you plan on using it while you’re moving. Traditional wet (whiskey) compasses are wrought with inherent errors due to acceleration and turning. Trying to glance down and get a useable heading while bouncing down a trail is just not going to be a good idea. I keep mine in my pack as a backup.

    I’ve been down this road a few times and I feel your pain. There is a lot of good advice in the above replies. All I have to add to it is don’t be too hasty to get rid of your bike and/or gear. Every time I do I end up buying it all again a year or two down the line. Branch out! Get social! There are a lot of peeps in your area that are in the same boat as you and are looking for someone to ride with. Trust me. It’s a lesson I’ve had to learn several times.

    I'm up in Montrose (Brackney, actually), always looking for places to ride and people to ride with. I also see these little "join a club, CYR" signs along some of the local loops but I have no idea what club this is referring to. On another note, I rode the Bear Creek Sportsman's Kuggamugga Trail Ride a couple of weeks ago ( over in Hancock, NY) and have to toss out mad props. It was a great time and well put together. Definitely going again next year.

    Handling clue for first-gen aluminum CR owners?

    If you have time to kill, have at and let us know what you find! Honda was obsessed with ‘tuned chassis flex’ via motor mounts back in the mid 90’s (check out the VTR1000 Super Hawk and the NSR 500 from about the same era) which is funny because it would have directly predated the gen-1 frame. They tried it for one production bike and some testing on the GP circuit, then went back to conventional chassis design, then began the process of thinning frame spars, swing arms, and other components to find the middle ground. Personally, I tossed a set of 04 Showa forks on mine, had both ends revolved a bit softer on the high speed circuit, sprung it for my weight, and enjoyed it for what it is: dead sexy and faster than I will probably ever be. But hey, don’t let me steal your thunder! Tinkering is half the fun (often more than, actually). Just be sure to ease into it. A failed top mount will quickly turn a frame into a spring and the tank slapped that follows is often epic.

For those of you looking for the real thing, I purchased a new, straight from Honda, 2000 CR250R PWK for my 03 CR250R through Ron Ayers for $195 (regular price and met the free shipping minimum). I see they’ve bumped it up to $199, but still a decent price for a brand new carb with the #7 slide.

    Good wood riding tips

    Having your suspension set up (or at least sprung for your weight) with fresh oil and base line settings along with fresh tires is where everyone should begin. Flywheel weights are nice. Skid plate and pipe guards are smart. After that, go ride it and address what you don’t like. I have a 03 CR250R with a 11oz fww, Gnarly pipe, skid plate, and Cr-high bars. It worked great for me on stock suspension set up soft until I brought it to the north east, then had to revalve it due to all the rocks and roots up here in PA. My point is: there is no magic set-up. Get yourself to a good starting point (baseline) and then go ride. Heck, my setup changes from year to year as my skill, fitness, and riding styles evolve (not always for the better, esp fitness...). Don’t go out and spend a fortune on building the perfect ‘on paper’ bike. Building a great bike is a interactive process (you and your machine, not the inter webs). Enjoy the ride.
