  1. Bikes get my vote. I just trail ride, no MX, so getting older I thought I'd try some quads and got myself two new CanAm 1000's and they were cool and generally less taxing to ride so i could ride all day (I cant say the same for some rigid axle sport quads I had). But I wouldn't venture into as rough of terrain as I would on a bike. After about a year, I sold the CanAms (and took a beating on resale). Back to a few dirty bikes and track bikes and figure I'll just go slower as I get older and try to minimize the fall downs. At least I wont have an 800lb beast rolling on top of me. Oh, I also HATE working on quads. I wonder what the OP wound up getting 10 years ago.

    Increasing low end?

I've got an older Honda TRX350 4x4 utility quad I purchased primarily for plowing a very long drive and slow speed utility type work on the property. It is old, but was in great shape, but I wanted to check the upper internals out as I had no history on it. Pulled head and cylinder. Clean as a whistle inside, can still see cross hatching. I was just going to go with the basics, new rings, new valve seals and lap the valves and call it a day, but then I got to thinking if I can get more low end out of it. Stock is 8.5:1 static compression. I'm thinking of going with a Wiseco piston and can either go 10.25:1 or 12:1. If I stay with the stock cam and do not add any more lift or duration, I'm thinking this will primarily add to low end torque after I get the jetting sorted out. It is air cooled with an oil cooler, so I don't want to start taxing the cooling design, but considering most of the hard work will be in cold weather, I don't think I should run into too much trouble. Thoughts?

I thought I was on a Harley board when I read all that work that needed to be done.

    Fuel Screw Fell Out ??

    Thanks for the tip.
  5. Has anyone had any problems with the fuel screw backing out when using one of the Koube adapters?? I just put one on my CRF250X a few weeks ago and the screw and the tool backed out and fell out. I believe the final fall out was when the bike was on the trailer as it was horrible to start whe we got to our riding place and it wouldn't idle. When I went to adjust the screw, it was MIA. Perhaps I installed it wrong, although it I can't imagine how you could really mess it up. Anyne else's experience with the Koube tool would be appreciated. Thanks.

    2001 YZ250F - Problems?

I am considering picking up a 2001 YZ250F I found for sale. I currently have a KTM520EXC that I converted to motard and want something lighter for offroad riding. Is there anything to be aware of on the 2001 model year? Thanks.

    2002 520EXC Suspension Probs

Nope, havent had anything revalved. All stock. Nor have I had the shock serviced. Although I dont think I should need to as the bike only has about 35 hours on it and I bought it the tail end of this summer as a leftover. How did it work for you after you had it revalved?
  9. I have a 2002 520EXC with springs from EndurO Engineering. The front is a .46 and I cant remember exactly what the rear was without looking for the invoice, but it was the one they recommended for my weight. The rear is a straight rate spring. I set the sags about three months ago and cant remember the specifics other then it looked like the spring rates were borderline light from everything I had read on here, but they were still in the range. The big problem I am having with the bike is over whoop sections. Whoops used to be my strong point when I had my old yamaha MXers (an 89 YZ250 and a 00 YZ426). The rear end on the KTM just feels like it never hooks up over the whoops and it is really difficult to get the front light. It just feels like the rear tire is constantly breaking traction and I am not going crazy on the throttle. I now cant stand whoops... Any ideas on what suspension settings I should start messing with?

    Dual sport a 450EXC?

I recently converted my 520 with a Trick Dual Sport kit (www.trickdualsport.com) and love it. I wouldnt want to take it for a lengthy ride on the road, but it is great for getting to the trails and back. I am geared down one tooth on the front from stock and have no problems with the gearing for riding on the road. I rode a DRZ400SE (that is the dual sport one, right?) prior to buying the KTM and it was just flat out too heavy and lacking power for my tastes. Other then the soft suspension on the KTM, I love it.
  11. Myself and a friend are going to be at the Hatfield McCoy area from Oct 16th thru the 20th. Will be staying within riding distance to the Rockhouse trails. This is our first time there, so it would be great to meet up with more to explore!! We also have tons of room at the place we are staying if anyone is interested. My friend will be on a 01' YZ426 and he is an excellent off road rider, I will be the limiting factor as to what trails him and I will be venturing onto. Contact me if interested.
