    It shouldn't be popping and backfiring at idle. Does the idle improve when you apply the choke? Does the choke lever move smoothly back and forth on the handlebar? What year is the bike, how many miles, how old is the gas and how long did it sit? Idle problems are frequently caused by debris in the pilot jet; which can be caused by old fuel, ethanol, sitting longer than a few months max. I wouldn't change anything besides the pilot jet in the carb until you find the problem. With clean stock parts the bike should run fairly well. No reason to complicate the problem.

    Handling improvement from lowering?

    I'm 65, my DR is 43,400. I'm 5'9", 30" inseam and 180 pounds. If you're good with tools and like to tinker, lowering the DR is almost free. I put my lower gel seat on for the last week of the season, and although I don't care for the seat, that 1" lower made a nice improvement in my ability to dab (trials term for; catch myself with a foot). The proper lowering takes a few hours, again assuming that you're ok with tools. That will get you 1-1/2" at both ends. But if you aren't pounding the dirt, which you aren't, you can just move the bolt in the shock to the top hole, and slip the forks up in the triple clamps. Go for gentle test ride and look for rub marks on the underside of your fenders, if there's no rubbing, test a little faster. The DR is a topheavy bike and intimidates me anytime I'm going slow enough to need a foot to keep my balance. I have an aftermarket shock so I can't lower my rear suspension by moving the bolt. But I did order a pair of 1" lowering links. Lower your DR, it isn't permanent, you'll most probably like it. Front fender rubbing on mine causes just a little buzzing when I'm hard on the front brake. But this isn't where to look, it's in the middle where the fender bolts are; you don't want it hitting those bolts.

    Can I lay down the DR for long?

    The left side of the starter gets engine oil? It will slowly get worse. My started around 10,000 miles, by the time I got to 15k it was pretty much all the time (worse when cold). I greased the starter bushings (both ends of the armature) at 15k (marine grease). It hasn't made a sound since; I'm at 42,324 after today's ride.

    Preventative Maintenance for high mileage DR650

    When you're in there check your NSU screws, many have found theirs loose, even at low mileages.Both o-rings, #15 and #16.     Clue #1, don't go postal when you don't understand something. We all started somewhere. The instructions at the top of the page are exceptionally well done, kudos to jmc1583.I suggest hosing the bike off before you start, paying close attention to the head and under the tank (if it's still on). You don't want dirt falling into an open rocker arm cavity. Remove a plug, stick a straw in the hole, rotate the wheel, watch the straw rise with the piston. The plug hole is at a sharp angle to the piston travel and the straw will bind/bend, so bump the tire, watch the straw, wiggle the straw, bump the tire, etc. When the straw stops, you're at one TDC. Remember that there are TWO TDCs, one with both valves completely closed. This is the one you want. On the second TDC both valves are slightly open (called 'overlap'), the one you don't want. Remove both valve covers (they have reuseable o-rings). Wiggle both the intake and exhaust rocker arms. At one TDC, both rockers will be immoveable, solid. This is where you don't want to be. Rotate the engine another revolution, watching and wiggling the straw. Now try to wiggle the rocker arms again, side to side; there should be slight movement. It's unlikely you'll feel .004 with your fingers with oil damping the clearance but side to side is more obvious (larger clearance). This is where you want to be. Rotate the engine watching/wiggling the straw, two or three times. Somewhere in here, you're going to have the 'Aha' moment. Now ya got it. Wiggly rocker arms are the correct TDC. The piston is at the same TDC both times. The cam, rockers, and valves are not. This next tidbit is going to take a leap of faith. It doesn't matter where the 'T' is in the little window. Since both valves are closed for almost 360* (BDC of the compression stroke, TDC of the compression stroke, spark, BDC of the power stroke), the straw is more than close enough. When it stops and the rocker arms wiggle, you're at the mysterious, coveted TDC. Don't chop up your gasket surface with anything harder than alum, no steel (razor blades for instance). An old credit card has been mentioned. Leave your impatience in the house, relax, enjoy the project, even if it takes all weekend. Cheers

    DR 650 won't start, idles for seconds

    When you cleaned the carb, did you remove the pilot jet to check it? It's a very tiny hole and is most responsible for idle. If the bike sits too long, it likely to be plugged; like over a winter. Since it fires on starter fluid, you have spark. "one hunch is that the gas tank's petcock is actually lower than the carburetor intake so maybe the flow isn't there." This is entirely possible and happens with both the IMS and Safari aftermarket tanks. It's not a problem with the stock tank. The flatter (lower) this rise, the better your chances.

    Oil leak on 2007 dr650

    I haven't heard of a metal base gasket leaking. How good are you with tools, did you kink the replacement gasket? Did you rush cleaning off the old gasket and nick the alum surface? Did you use a sealer on the new gasket (eliminating the nicked alum problem)? I've been running Mobil One 15-50 auto oil for 34,xxx miles. To answer your question, I'd replace the CCT gasket again before going after the base gasket. Some recommend cleaning the area well and sprinkling on baby powder, run the engine and the oil will show the leak. Although there is only a tiny distance between the two seams, so the leak may not be that exact. In the small space between the base and CCT gasket, spray on athlete's foot powder may work better.

    Looking at a used DR650; what do you think?

    Falling into the turns is how the DR embarrasses so many sport bikes in the twisties. Getting passed by a 650 single on knobby tires really ruins their day. Someone mentioned 4strk = 4 stroke. I couldn't stand the intake noise with the side cover off the airbox: HHHHHOOOOOOONNNNNNKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK Opening the top directs the noise up into the seat base, way better.
  14. What the Raptor petcock might do differently is fill your engine with gas when you forget to turn it off. Something to try, next time you hit reserve, use PRI instead. The petcock vacuum is a separate passage, it doesn't care what the slide is doing. Here you can see the brass tube it uses.

    Removing NSU on 2004 DR 650SE

    If removing the NSU, the bike won't idle with the kickstand down; unless you bypass the kickstand switch.
