  1. Just a quick question to ask what model year they started offering e-start on the KTM 250 ECX RFS. I'm in the market for a used one and couldn't quickly find this info, even with a search. Thanks.

    Hey OldeDude, How does the addition of the 351 big bore kit affect the "lighter feel" that riders claim for 250s vs. 400s (that whole reciprocating mass concept). I'd like the extra power of the kit, but I'm primarily looking at a 250 for that lighter feel.
  3. I'm looking to get a used 250EXC 4T. I've read lots of threads here and understand some of the knocks against the bike. But when I read it's "underpowered", what are you comparing it to? How does it compare to the "recreation" bikes like XRs, TTRs, etc. How does it compare to the "competition" bikes like CRFs, WRs, etc.

    That's funny EuroFreak because it's the Northumberland single track that prompted me to start thinking about a new bike! The DRZ was a real handful in that gnarly stuff. It is my first offroad bike and I wasn't sure what I'd like, so I got the popular and indestructible Goldilocks bike. Not too much a dirt bike, not too much a road bike but juuuuust right! A year in, I now find that I like the trail better than the road so I'm willing to give up some road worthiness for better trail ability. I think the 250 will still be ok on the dual sport rides I like to attend because top speed seems to be 70+ mph which is plenty fast enough for me. I'd probably only ever want about 60mph on short stretches of pavement and 50mph on longer stretches of dirt road. It can still go that fast with 200lbs on top, right? Thanks to Ride and others for explaining the reciprocating mass physics phenomenon. Makes sense to me. I haven't been fortunate enough to compare two elite bikes like the Husky's but I have ridden the DRZ250 vs. my 400. I was attributing all the difference to the 30lb less weight on the Suzukis but I guess there's more to it than that. The Huskys and others have very little weight difference between their 250s and 400/450s so I was confused why you wouldn't just take the 450 if the weight was the same. I understand better now so thanks all!

    Thanks bigbob, but why? Is it because you can be more exacting in the gear you've chosen to ride in the tight stuff on a 250? That would be my thought anyway. Just looking for confirmation.

    Can someone tell me why a 250 is regarded as a better woods bike than a 450? They seem to be similar in weight and the ergonomics are fairly similar (wheelbase, seat height, trail, etc.).

    Maintenance ranking of the new Huskys

    Sorry 'bout that. What I meant to say was that something like a Yamaha TTR250 (a "recreation" bike) would be less maintenance-intensive (3/10) than Yamaha's WR250 (9/10), their "competition" 250 4-stroke. I just picked the numbers arbitrarily to make a point. A CRF250 would apparently be an 11 out of 10 meaning it's very heavy maintenance. Someone above has said they figure the Husky's are comparable in maintenance-schedule to the Asian "competition" bike. Mikekay says they're much less intensive than even an XR. Wow... All seem to agree, they're easy to work on. I like to do some of my own basic maintenance but have eliminated the CRF250 from my list, strictly for the maintenance issues.
  8. If you could generalize that the major manufacturers competition bikes are more maintenance-intensive than their recreation bikes, where in this spectrum would the new Huskys rank? If a WR250F was a 9/10 and a TTR250 was a 3/10, what would a TC/TE250 be?

    Carb venting an S

    I did the search and read the threads, most of which dealt with the E and its different carb with multiple vent hoses. A couple dealt with the stock S carb. So just to be clear, on the stock S carb, I have only one vent hose which is the one that also vents out excess fuel in the bowl. It hangs down from the carb on the left side and hangs in front of the regulator/rectifier. If I'm concerned about water crossings, I should "T" this vent so that one end also goes up? And I must also leave the existing vent hose down for excess fuel run-off? I've had my carb off several times and as far as I can recall, there are about three hoses. One for fuel inflow from the petcock. One actuates the vacuum diaphragm in the petcock and the third is this float bowl venting hose. Correct? And the final word on venting into the airbox is what - yeah or nay? I read both opinions in my search.

  11. I hope this is the appropriate forum for this question. Seemed to make the most sense among the tech forums. I understand that HP as measured at the counter sprocket versus the rear wheel is different. Is there some way to compare? For instance, I am looking at two bikes: Suzuki DR200 - 20HP at the counter sprocket Honda CRF150 - 11.5HP at the rear wheel Couldn't find the corresponding HP ratings on either bike in their respective forums. I don't need those specific numbers necessarily, just a comment on how one might compare to another. eg. 11.5HP rear wheel is comparable to X HP at the cs. Thank you!

    Sorry, I'm clueless about all this tech stuff but I posted a question on this forum about why the HP on the CRF150 (11.5, stock) was so much higher than the TTR125 (7, stock). I've had about eight replys, but none that answered this question. I don't need anything really technical, just a basic insight. Obviously there's the displacement difference, but 11.5HP vs. just 7HP? Thanks!

    Thanks for the responses, but no one has yet answered my question. Why the big difference in HP? Is the Honda engine just that much more efficient? junkie650's response may explain some of the weight difference. Thanks, i heart ridin, I was really leaning toward the Honda and since you've owned both, your response is meaningful.
  14. 1. According to BBR's website, HP on the CRF150 is 11.5 while the TTR125 is only about 7 (both stock). Why the huge advantage for the Honda? 2. Why the big weight difference between these two bikes? Even the 2006 Honda is about 40 lbs heavier than the TTR. Obviously I know the engine displacement is bigger. I was almost decided on the TTR125, but am now seriously considering the 06 CRF150 electric. Thanks!
  15. I'm consider either a TTR125, KLX/DRZ 125 or CRF100 for my very short girlfriend. Some people are telling me "Oh, if it's for your GF, better get the e-start." Is it really that big a deal? I don't think any of these bikes can be that hard to kick over. E-start limits me to just the TTR. Whaddaya think ladies? I've read lots about all three bikes, I just wanted comments about the kicker vs. electric. Thanks!
