    TXC 450/510 Suspension Thread

    Page 46 (English) in the manual will show you the schrader valve for relieving air from the outer chamber, noted as E. (this used to be a screw on previous editions of this fork, sorry for the confusion) Noted as F is the screw to bleed all air from the sealed cartridge element when servicing, and they are correct to never loosen it, unless you have the cartridge removed for servicing and you follow the prescribed bleeding procedure.     2008 Sachs Shock Exposed.

    bimota, The technician is correct; you do not want to loosen the pre-load nuts to the point that there is negative pre-load on the spring. The typical spring free length on the stock Sachs spring is 260 mm; this will vary a few mm due to manufacturing tolerances. You can check the spring length with the machine off the ground to be sure it is 260 mm or less. Backing off spring pre load is not the ideal way to lower your bike, no need checking any sag readings because they will most likely be out of range when doing this. You should be wary of purchasing a link that will lower the seat height more than about 3/4 of an inch. I know links are available to go further than this for many bikes, but you change the leverage ratio enough that it does change the damping curve and spring rate requirements. These variations should be addressed if you are going this route. You also run the risk of hard contact of the rear tire into the fender with a lowering link. You might consider an internal shock spacer, your damping requirements can be addressed at the time it is installed, plus the ideal spring rate change is not as dramatic. That's if the spring rate is correct for you in the first place. Good luck, Les

    2008 Sachs Shock Exposed.

    Ride; The current (about 2000 to current year I believe) Sachs has always had a steel body and is by far superior to aluminum body shocks for resisting fade and not wearing out like anodized aluminum. Ohlins recently (2007?) went aluminum body on some of their shocks and in my opinion makes it not worth considering it an upgrade, but they are super light. Many of the aluminum body Ohlins I have had apart this past year have showed the tell tale black residue you see from many aluminum shocks. KTM/WP went aluminum body for '08, with their heavy valving and spring requirements and shock loading I suspect some owners may be in for a surprise as the miles rack up on them. The thick wall thickness of most aluminum shocks can make it kind of porky, comparing weights of a stock aluminum KYB unit with a steel body Ohlins from one of my own bikes showed the Ohlins to be 1.5 lbs. lighter, quite a savings. Weigh a CR/CRF shock, WOW! Coffee; I have 20 years of recorded specs, settings and set-ups. Quite the library! And yes, the fork has a superman mid valve. Boreit; Not enough time for any contamination. With all things assembled and installed correctly you should find very little to no contamination with the Sachs or Marzocchi units.     Adjusting Fork Tube Height

    Exactly, when the clamps are too tight, the upper tube (thin wall) will deform/compress and all oil clearance to bushing is gone. Then it starts to wear. Greg is correct, 12 ft/lbs. and nice explanation too! Cheers, Les

    The only thing to watch for is overtightening the bolts, especially on the lower clamp. Too tight and the inner bushings WILL drag at this point and take off the hard coat, if you note black fluid on a regular oil change it is usually too late. The black residue is aluminum and anodize. It will never stop wearing unless they are hard anodized again and hopefully in time to bring back the correct inside diameter. Unfortunately I have seen this happen too often. With the fork tops flush with the upper clamp, expect better straight line stability with a sacrifice in turning precision. With the top of the fork exposed expect more precise turning with a sacrifice in straght line stability. There are numerous ways to alter your chassis to get a wide range of results, find what you like and use minor variations for different types of area's you ride in. Best of luck with the new machine!     Solid upper tripple clamps

    I usually get a chance to take a quick look around the site daily, but don't get the time to really check everything out, I usually get reports from members over the phone! We are waiting for our TXC510, and just have the pictures and Kelly's ride report to go on. It sounds excellent, just what we were hoping for. A big thanks to everyone is in order, espescially Russ and Kelly. Much appreciated, now back to work! Lookee there, 7 posts!

    Center of pivot bolt to leading edge of pad; 2005 CRF150F kickstand = 290 mm or 11.417" For what its worth, Some people have asked about a (longer) XR250R (1996-2004) kickstand for their lifted CRF150; 2004 XR250R kickstand = 350 mm or 13.779" For the heck of it, 2004 XR400R kickstand = 390 mm or 15.345" I know that all of these listed will interchange.
