    DipStick Temperature '86 XL600R

Where can I get one of those dip stick guages, sounds like a great idea. Thanks; Scott

    XL600, 83, Hard starting, I've tried everyting!

Well, I just installed the new OEM stator in bike today, WOW, its started first kick, NO BS!!! I am quite sure now that the stator has been the big problem all along. Now that I have that fixed I can move on to other tuning issues and fine tune the bike. Wow, I am happy!!! Thanks for your help; Scott

Replacing XL600 stator, what's your thought?

Thanks for the input. I broke down and bought the OEM unit 'cause I heard that the OEM unit was being discontinued. But I will go ahead and rewind my old one to have one on hand in case new one fails. Brilliant idea having the back-up exciter coil ready to go!!! I found out today the new unit is waiting at the shop for pick up, I will have the stator installed this weekend, I will tell you how it goes. Thanks folks,
  5. I am going to replace my 1983 XL600R stator assembly in order to isolate some problems, so far I have these options: 1) rewind current stator (may not work for long, but cheap) 2) buy used stator (may not work for long or work at all! But cheap) 3) buy aftermarket (may not work for long, but affordable) 4) But OEM (will work for a while, but expensive) Does anyone have any specific advice? Ricky Stator has aftermarket stators- has anyone tried one? For those folks that have re-wound thier own, how long did it work? Thanks; Scott

Thanks for the information folks, you have all been a great help. The more I look into the problem with my XL600 the more I think it's a stator issue. Here are the newest numbers from my bench test: primary coil .3 ohms sec coil 8.6 k ohms w/ little resistor in plug cap exiter coil 356 ohms @ 68F to 408 ohms @100F pulse generator 370 ohm Based on what I have read so far from various sources the stator exiter coil resistance should be no more than 320 ohms at room temp. My coil starts out at 356 ohms and gets worse as temp goes up. Now I will try to get a new or used stator unit to try out. If that doesn't work I will just keep trying. Scott

    Xr600....need Help!!!!

Does anyone now if the stator turned out to be the problem/solution for this bike after all? Symptoms here are really close to the symptoms I'm having with my 83 XL600. Do the after market stators work as well as the OEM unit? Scott

Yup, no problem with fuel petcock. I dunked and cleaned carbs in this nasty cleaner, came out real nice, I used compessed air and cleaned the crap out of them. Who knows, still could be some crud in there. I will focus on electrical for now until that is illiminated then move back to carbs if need be. Scott

Update: Stator After readjusting my ammeter I am getting 350 ohms on blk/red lead to ground, I also laid the stator on top the toaster for a while and gently raised the temp. The resistance went up another 50 ohms or so, not sure if that would be a normal rise though. I spent some time on the phone and the web looking for stator but before I blow 130+ bones on one I want to be a little more sure. I am not sure If I want to take a chance to re-wind the thing if it's not cooked. Coil I also tested the coil, I have the coil on my bench now, bewteen the two leads (primary winding, one black and one green) I get .2 ohms; clymer says should be .8 ohms but I don't always trust clymer. From the HT plug lead to either input terminals (one black and one green) I get 8k ohms; clymer says should be 4k ohms but there is a small resistor/fuseable link in the plug cap which my meter reads 4k ohms, so that makes sense, 4+4=8k ohms total. Perhaps my primary is toast but I don't know what the resistance readings really should be, does anybody know for sure? Scott

    xl600 spark question!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have the same situation, seems like a week spark, not big and fat. Bike has been hard starting recently and over the years has had stalling and poor idle issues during the warm up phase. I have gone over the carbs many times, I have replaced the idle bypass diaphram, I have changed the timing chain, lapped valves and new rings. I have now moved on to the ingnition, I have changed out the CDI with one from another bike, I have now focused on the stator assembly, I understand that these stators can become weak over time. I will keep you posted if a new stator works. Scott
  12. Well, where do I start.... I bought the bike 10 yrs ago to replace another that was stolen. From day one the bike would start when cold with tickler but would not idle after two minutes running, it would often quit while waiting for light to change, I had to keep the revs up a bit. After the bike warmed up idle and performance were ok. As time passed the symptoms got worse, 5 years ago I pulled the lump apart and found a huge deposit of black crap in the high speed intake port, I cleaned that out figuring that was the probelm, no luck Two years ago I pulled it apart again, all looked good, intake was still clear, new rings, honed clyinder, clearances checked, inspected and lapped valve seats, carbs cleaned, changed cam chain and tensioner (loose and warn). Bike ran ok but idle issue persisted, last year tried some simple things, float levels, idle srcew re-adjusted etc, during this I noticed tiny-tiny holes in main carb air bypass diaphram (on side of main carb), changed diaphram. Aahaaaaa I said, that must be it, but noooooo..... seems to be getting worse. Did some more research, thought spark issue, changed plug for fun, bought used CDI pack but problem still there. Also tried another coil from old two stroke, no difference. Spark doesn't look wicked bright but it's there. All other electrics look fine, regulator, etc. So now I'm trying to get ready for this summer, I have the carbs off again and I have the stator assembly off. I heard that crap around stator/rotor can effect spark? Sounds fishy to me. I am getting 300 ohms resistance on exciter coil (blk/red to ground, this is the exciter coil I think). I live in Canada but do not run the bike in winter, I am at 200ft above sea level, jetting seamed to be ok when I bought the bike. All is stock, no pipe, original airbox, original jetting etc. HELP ME...... Scott
